I don't know if it is supposed to sound different than a piston engine, but its alot different then my friends talon. Almost sounds really high pitched, and not like a spooling turbo at all. Is this the twin scroll sound? or is teh turbo about to die?

thanks

the sound, too narrow it down for you guys, almost sounds like a drill, or a dentist tool. just really, really, high pitched. It's probably screwed up, or fins eating away at housing. but i don't know.

Sounds like your turbo is shot to hell. I replaced mine because it wasn't spinning freely. So, I went ahead and replaced my turbo system to T04.

If its what I think your describing, sounds like the compressor and/or turbine wheels are hitting the housing(s). I just had mine rebuilt because of the same thing.

even if the turbo is dying it'll probably still boost fine, your motor will just get fucked by it. As the turbo scrapes the sides it throws metal shavings into the engine, which will quickly ruin your compression.
All turbos sound basically the same, a rotary turbo is no different than a piston turbo.

If the blade is infact scratching the sides, and they are damaged, I would need a new housing right? How much would that go for? Or would it be cheaper just to buy a new turbo.

if it spins freely it's probably OK...

as far as the sound.. if everything is working properly and there are no vacuum leaks or exhaust leaks, you shouldnt' be able to hear it AT ALL...

you should hear the turbo. You can hear it on a completely stock FC. you can even hear then in the 1.8L golfs

By the way the turbo should sound like music.

Im running a 3 inch pipe to a cone filter as my intake ( no AFM ) and at higher boost levels ( 13+ ), my turbo will start to sound like that too. Its always had a little bit of that "drill bit" noise though. Its nothing to worry about unless its loud and really annoying.
