What should a rebuild cost?
I have an S5 N/A, and I found a guy who has a shop fairly close by, who says he can probably do it for $1800, based on what I told him. Having to add coolant every day, white smoke when cold, taking a long time to start before not starting at all. I was pretty excited about getting it rebuilt for that price, but of course if there's more wrong with it, it'll be more. What do you guys think? Does that sound right? $1.000 for the kit, $800 for the labor. What if there's more wrong with it? What more can be wrong with it. Based on the prices I gave you, what do you think the damage would be? I'd really hate to give up on this car, but it's been such a money pit, at some point I'd have to cut my losses.

you can rebuild it yourself for half of that. not even that if you have good compress and just replace the soft seals (coolant, your problem, and oil seals) its not very difficult on account there's just 3 moving parts to worry about. i would look into rebuilding it yourself.

Thanks, but I don't trust myself to do much more than change spark plugs, oil and tires. But from what I described, it doesn't sound like there should be any bigger problems?

My engine builder charges the same for a fully built motor. that is without installation. Losing coolant and white smoke one of your side housing will need replaced. They have a tendency to corrode if the engine sits for a long time without being run. Usually the rear in the lower driver side corner while the engine is off coolant will seep in on some cars it will go away once warm.
