what "series"?

hey guys, i was just wondering since i am not that familiar with all the things on an rx7 since i own a Conquest TSi and i'm asking for my brother's sake being the rx7 is his...

...how do you tell what "series" your car is?

his car's engine (1988 n/a w/120k) seems to be on it's way "out" and i think he may need to rebuild it, or buy a different (running) one. it blows white smoke out the exhaust and just started doing it today. any advice?

thanx for any replies...

As far as FCs go, Series 4 is 1986-88, and Series 5 is 1989-1991.

A Series 6 would be an FD. I can't remember the splits for Series 1-3, just remember they're all first gens.

1st Gen's

1979-80 Series 1 (aka SA)
1981-83 Series 2 (aka FB)
1984-85 Series 3 (aka FB also)

The SA, FB, FC, FD conversation comes from the primary identifyer letters in the resepctive series VIN #'s.

I believe the FD3S splits are...

Series VI - '93 - '95
Series VII - '96 - '98
Series VII - '99 +

All Japan VIN's are "FC3S - xxxxxxxx"
US/North American VINs are "JM1FC3....."
The FC33 = "FC3" model, 3-door coupe
The FC3C = "FC3" model, convertible
"FC" is just a shortened version of "FC3S".
