what is this sensor?

what is the sensor that is on the back of the front cover near the water pump? its next to the green plug water temp sensor. it has 2 wires going into it which lead to a connection then into the loom. what is this sensor for? can i leave it unplugged?

Got a picture? I have an S4 J-spec engine, but I don't have another plug next to the water temp sensor.

I always wondered this myself...never could sort it out (never tried, actually). My '86 and my '87 both had the same setup...a temp sensor and another sensor. I think it probably had to do with the emissions nonsense.

heheh well on my car both of the wires had frayed and broken so i duno whether to try and fix it as its going to be hard and i dont know which is positive and negative.

it needs a 21mm socket/wrench to remove where the green plugged water temp sensor is only 19mm

Oh most of those are resistor style sensors...they won't be polar.
