what is this sensor?

So I boost leak tested my fc yesterday and found numerous leaks. As i started solving most leaks the one that leaks the most now is at this sensor. I have an 89 t2, but previous owner swapped in a s4 motor. So this sensor is located between the firewall and the uim and is bolted to the uim. The picture im added is taken from the pass side as you can barely see the top mount, its the cylindrical sensor that is mostly lightened up. Please let me know, the leak is leaking from where the wires go into the sensor. Im asking because 1) can i get rid of it and block it off 2) what the heck is it. thanks guys!
