what S5 model i have?
So i bought an S5 1990 rx7. It has no power windows no sunroof 4 piston brakes, cloth interior, no ABS looked like a t2 rear end but the trany is definitively NA. makes no sense. Its also a black on black fairlly low vin number on the car.
Based on that, it could be a GTUs. There's a sticky at the top of this forum with scans of brochures. Cross reference that with what your car has and see if you can determine a model. S5 N/As were kind of sketchy as far as models went, especially 1991, when it was simply a coupe with options.
Not easy to edit on my phone, so unfortunately, I'll just post again. A GTUs has a 4.3 ring and pinion. You could always jack up the rear and carefully count rotations.

I doubt it's a GXL.
Are you sure it is a 90? Does the VIN match the title? What letter is the 10th digit in the VIN?
What color code is on the door jamb? What date of mfgr?
Plenty of people have swapped in 4 piston brakes. Are the rear brake rotors vented?

You're right. I forgot he said no power options. It does sound like a GTU with swapped in four piston brakes. I was originally thinking it could have been a bottom of the line GXL, but that's not right.

I mean this thing is basic as far as all that goes it does have A/C but doesnt look like its a factory. its has a quick steering rack also took it for a ride up the street today and oh boy does that thing turn on a dime. Is there anything else that could be an idicator as to what it is I know the plate next to the vin number that has all the other info is missing so go figure
The only options are GTU or GXL. That was it for N/As in 1990 other than a convertible. The lack of power options makes it look like a GTU. Check the sticky, "What did my RX-7 come with?"
The only thing throwing me off is the no sunroof.
I had thought the only no sunroof 89 and 90 cars were GTUs cars. But yeah with the 15" wheel specification on the door jamb it should be a GTU or a GXL...
All the GTU cars of 89 and 90 AFAIK came with sunroofs. Not until 91 did the sunroof become an "option" again...
Possible someone was trying to emulate a GTUs with a GTU...or its some Frankenstein car, two cars welded togeather etc...
Rear brake rotors vented? And a rather unlikely possibility is that someone welded the sunroof shut. I did that on my 89 GTU when we converted it to a race car...

GTUs came with the same wheels the Turbo II did.. It'd have listed 16 inch wheels from the factory.
GXLs all had the buttons for the adjustable suspension, power windows, and a sunroof...
It's a GTU.

Everything points to a GTU with 4-piston brakes swapped in except the no-sunroof.
Like i said, i was not aware any 89-90 cars came without a sunroof. This would be the first one i have seen or heard about.
