Question What part is this? why is it leaking goop? and how can I fix it?

One of my rear axles is leaking its internal juices out onto my Diff and subframe. I looked in the FSM and apparently this part doesn't bear mentioning...

What is it called? Where can I get a new one?

please tell me I don't have to replace the whole axle...

I circled the part in both pics, that whole plate just comes off if you stick your finger under it. The one on the other axle if fine, and I can't tell how it is attached.

replace 3 4 and 7 and you should be good. It's leaking the grease that keeps everything moving correctly. I've never rebuilt one, but from the diagram it looks doable.

3 and 4 make sense, but why 7?

Also, 3 I'm assuming is the ring I'm missing that holds that flat metal piece in place? where might I acquire such a ring?

Yea, that cap comes off, but it does not go back on. You need a whole new cup (#3) at the very least. I actually had the cap knocked out of the cup and tried to replace it, but its press fit and will NEVER seat properly again.

I actually just got a complete new set of axles since its not worth the time to rebuild them w/ stock components.

rust has likely compromised the seal of the plug/cap.

Number 3 which is the fixed joint needs to be replaced as the flanged portion is not serviceable. The boot clamp needs to be replaced as well, most times the clamp gets damaged when removing it. When removing the the outer portion be careful not to drop the all of the ***** of the joint, denting them or damaging them will cause a vibration.

Alright, Thanks guys. I just got off the phone with Ray over at Malloy Mazda, and he says mazda no longer makes that part so you have to buy the whole axle.

Also, that metal cup is all one piece, and it's a better idea to just replace the whole axle.
