What is this part?

Digging around under the passenger dash of my 88 SE, I found this square metal piece on the inside of the speaker panel, which I detatched to install new speakers in. It has a thick wiring harness leading up into the wiring of the car, and it says:

"7G29", then ingaved: "FB67 67 790 IMASEN JAPAN"

What's it do? Can I get rid of it? This isn't that crappy front speaker amp, is it? It's right above that foot heater vent that's on the same panel.

Do you have automatic seat belts or regular ones? It might be the passive seatbelt restraint unit..or some name like that. If you have no auto seat belts...then i think you are talking about the same box i found on my 88 AE...(it has regular seat belts..i will guess yours does also)..if that is the cae then i am not sure what it is....the amp would be a good guess..but someone else will have to chime in..

There is a real good chance that it is the anti-theft control unit, the only thing is the number embossed on it should be FB01-67-790.The amplifier is made by Matsushita and is integral with the speaker.

Yeah, I know it's not the amp. I'm gonna say it's for the car alarm. But. I have not gotten much of anything out of my car alarm at all recently. What does the stock alarm system do for me?

Well, depending on the year and assuming it's working properly,it should do the following:
it alarms when doors, hood or rear hatch are forced open.
The alarm is intermittent horn sound with hazard warning light flash. All this goes on for 4-6 mins. The starter motor is by-passed so motor can't be started until a key is used in the door or hatch
