In what order do i mod my car

I'm probably about to get a '87 turbo II that has just had a full engine rebuild with a mild port, and all scheduled maintenance. I'm not looking to do a lot to it, just basic stuff like intake and exhaust. Is there anything that i would need to get before any other part to prevent from messing up my car. I've heard a fuel pump is one of the first mods needed. Also what can i do to keep the APEX seal from going bad? thanks in advance, and please no 2 letter abrevations, i don't know what all that stuff means. ha.

You need a YMP to bolt to the LMK. Kidding!

First thing I'd do is a cone intake, then look for a cat-back exhaust - you can do those two mods VERY safely, and it will make a nice improvement in power.

Past that is when things start getting wacky . I would also plan on investing in a boost gauge.

Yeah, speaking of boost, when i drove the car the gauge hardly moved at all, i didn't really get on it hard though. What rpm does the boost really kick in?

I've just started modding my TII but I recommend: aftermarket boost and temp gauge are a must (stock gauges are not acceptable), electric fan, intake (you'll need to fab up a cold air box)and at least a downpipe for exhaust.

Definately get an aftermarket gauge.....I use Autometer but if you can afford better then by all means go for it. Your stock boost gauge goes off what the ecu sees from the stock boost sensor i.e. if the sensor is screwed up then your ecu could be seeing the wrong amount of boost. That's bad cause it won't add enough fuel and your engine could go pop.

regardless of what your gauge said, you should know when the boost kicks in. You'll know when you suddenly start going scary fast!

A stock TII should damn near peg out the stock boost gauge, and it should come on early. I would start by giving the car a tune-up - new plugs, air filter, etc. I bet the plugs are totally worn and the air filter is dirty as all get-out. A stock TII is not slow by any stretch of the imagination - they'll really get up and go!

As far as boost gauges, IMHO you can save a little money on a cheaper gauge, but have information that's not as accurate. You can get a new Greddy boost gauge for under $100, and you can get good used gauges on Ebay and the Parts Trader for even less.

Trust me, I know how much gauges cost - I've spent at least a grand on my current gauge setup, and that doesn't include the "cheap" gauges I've since hucked in the trash .

electric fan will get rid of the stock mechanical fan....there's nothing wrong with the stock fan (it moves plenty of air) but I like the throttle response I got when I replaced it with the electric fan.

Oh, and yes you should feel the turbo kick in....best feeling in the world, besides sex.

NO BOOST UNTIL AT LEAST 1000mi on the engine!!!!

that being said the fuel system is the weakest link in the RX-7. Get yourself boost and Air/Fuel and/or Exhaust Gas Temperature gauges FIRST before any mods. Then you can keep an eye on whats happening with your car. The rest is subject to what you want and what you can afford and what's safe.

Ideally how I would do things would be:

Gauges
Suspension
Tires/Wheels
Intake
Fuel Pump
Fuel Control System
Full Exhaust
Bigger Injectors
FMIC
Upgraded Turbo

This is only my opinion and not the end all be all of mod lists.

i would put a new radiator in... if you plan on modding your car for some decent HP, your car will run slightly hotter, and since the rad is most likely more then 10 years old it is a good time before you run into problems.

Even replacing it with a new stock mazda one is better then what you have now... or if u have hte $ go for fluidyne.

i personally like the HKS boost gauges.

btw becareful with the new exhaust and intake... espeically if you skip the cat and get a presilencer or straight pipe... you will get boost creep...

boost creep = happy rx7 shops

Well boost is related to load, not rpm. If you go through the rpms slow enough you can stay out of boost altogether. I suggest getting an intake, boost, and egt gauges first. The intake usually makes your boost more level and smooth. You definitely don't need to be getting on it yet. If the engines just been rebuilt you have a great opportunity for yourself. You get to decide the exact maintence the car gets. Start off with fresh plugs, wires, filters(fuel, air, oil, and change all fluids. Also do a proper break-in period to ensure your engine lasts. Meaning-Don't get into boost!

all you guys are wrong...

Buy a big *** tach, but only hook up the light, then get huge muffler tips, 20" rims, cut the springs, some "combat" body kit, neon, "Mazdaspeed" seatbelt pads, some cheasy "racing" stickers and a "Powered by Honda" sticker. then paint your interior trim pieces a contrasting color to the rest of the interior.

All this **** equals 129-137 rear wheel hp.

In all hosesty, do the suspension, brakes and cooling first, then take it out to the track for some fun, power should be last. Exhaust then intake then turbo, buy a Engine Management Computer since you'll be boosting like mad

Have fun

i'm not really looking to increase the performance a whole lot. I'm on a college kid budget. I'm going to follow the general order everyone is telling me. I'll look into the radiator idea. Then maybe an electric fan. Then an A/F and boost gauge. Then, maybe an intake. And i guess i'll have to have some sort of fuel system if i want to get exhaust. All this stuff really starts to add up. plus i want to get some wheels. i guess this is going to be an ongoing project. but that's what i love to do.

well i'm figuring since you threw a big ole exhaust on your car and popped the engine you've got no room to be talking about what order things should be done in. leave it up to the big boys junior.
