What are my engine options?

My engine is no more...so I need a new one. Can you guys lay out what my options are? I have an '88 n/a GXL (stock), so what will fit in there? From what I gather, it's too time consuming and expensive to put a turbo engine in so I kinda ruled that out. I would like to get a little more power than my current engine has (maybe a '91 or something???) and/or maybe an aftermarket turbo (exist/possible?). I'm pretty new to rotarys and cars in general, so go easy on me Thanks in advance.

If you don't want to go with forced induction, here's what I recommend: get a mild streetport on the motor, a lightweight steel flywheel, while the motor is out swap out the power steering rack for a manual one, (this way you can get rid of the power steering pump and pulley; save's weight and parasitic drag), if you go with a 90-91 motor, you'll have issues with hooking up the mechanical oil injectors, and I don't know how the VDI works. But you can get an 86-88 block with the later motors rotors for the higher compression and lighter weight.

Here is the Mazdatrix porting page so you can read up on it.
