What makes a GTUs?

I think i've found a GTUs, it has the TII rims, 4 pot calipers, is the transmission the same as a regular NA or is it a TII trans, I know about the 4.30 gearing and diff. I think its a Viscous LSD, do viscous lsd's go bad like a clutch type? Please fill me in so i know whether to make the purchase or not. Thanx

To make sure it is a GTUs here is what it should have;
- Same N/A lay out as the rest of all the S5 N/A except it has the 4.30 gears.
- Manual windows
- Steering rack is NON adjustable
- NO sunroof
- TII suspension
- It came in 3 colors White (blue interior), Red (black interior), Black (black interior)
- Stock listed tire size on the driver side door sill area is 205/55/16
- S5 TII wheels
- It could or cold not have AC that was a factory option

Get it, Love it, Race it. If you do end up getting it welcome to Team GTUs!! BTW how much, and what kind of condition is it in? Peace

There's a one in a million chance that a true-blue GTUs has a sunroof. Lack of sunroof in a series 5 car also does NOT guarantee it's a GTUs.

First thing I'd look at is the sticker inside the drivers side door jamb. If the car has no sunroof AND shows 16" tire/wheel size on that sticker, I'd BANK on it being the real thing. Quick, easy, and almost totally foolproof.

Personally, I don't think GTUs's are that special any more. Neat, yes...

S5 without sunroof for sale locally, black on black. Perfect car for what I need now that I wrecked my TII: BUT it's over priced and it's a friggen AUTOMATIC!

Wow we are feling frisky tonight. If you bothered to read my whole list it would show you that those combination of parts makes it a GTUs. And yep again there in my post shows the 205/55/16 tire size. Wow I wonder why I would know this?

What makes ya say that? I'm curious. Ya drive one? What didn't ya like? Lack of power?

D'oh. Okay...yeah you're right! Stay away from GTUs! TII's are much better! *grin*

I own a 1989 GTUs and it has a sunroof, I'm not sure if it had been installed after factory or what I can't remember what he said. Mine is black/black w/ a/c, however the belt is cut and the coolant is dry, must save power!, j.k Anyway if if you feel like a GTUs isn't powerful enough, swap an engine. Mine has a Jpec 89 Turbo II, however I don't have an IC(bad move) so it's not boostable right now, I mean I can boost it but I try not too. I love my GTUs.

I must have opened this thread and then replied much much later, as I wouldn't have had anything to say with Rotary Racer covering it so well!

I look at the sticker inside the door jamb as the "smoking gun" so to speak. Yes, the viscous LSD's CAN go bad.

I don't dislike the cars at all, they're great and perform very well! I just wouldn't put out the great effort to track down a real-deal GTUs that I once would have.

Have a friend's sunroofless "base" 86 borrowed right now, streetported motor and lots of lightening. Now that it's running 4.10's instead of 3.90's (was an auto car in a previous life.....) plus the new springs/shocks I'm all over in love with the FC in general, and thinking perhaps a zippy NA car might be something I have to build? See my short pinion gears posts, now that it seems to be a go, when that NA day comes I can affrodably find and throw in 4.44, 4.77, or even 4.875:1 and 5.125:1 gears. Zoom zoom!

Swap a turbo motor into a GTUs? SURE! But no real difference from any other light weight sunroofless car at that point IMHO...I'd pitch the little 7" rear end for the 8" turbo rear end, I guess selling the 4.30 GTUs gears might net you a set of deeper TII sized gears? Oh wait, since I wrecked my TII on the 6th that's exactly what I'm doing! (S4 sunroofless shell getting lightened and all my TII parts put on)

Hey, give me a little break, that's my only real wreck in ~8 years...If the car wasn't a 200K mile worn out dog that I for some reason started not liking, I'd have shod it with tires with enough tread to handle the little trip in the rain. Or slowed way down. Dumb on my part either way, but I wouldn't say it's at all an indicator that I'd tear up a "precious" GTUs. Matter of fact, if I had a GTUs I'd sell it in a heartbeat to get this OTHER black on black sunroofless S5 so that someone else could have the "special" car.

Quick question: What are the details behind the "non-adjustable" steering rack? You mean no tilt perhaps?

Yes your sunroof was an after market or custom install. I like the fact that you put a J-Spec TII motor in your ride. Now you almost have an Infany (I know I prob sp it wrong) 3.

Yeah when I was talking about the non-adjustable steering column I was talking about the fact that they do not have tilt. For some reason that word left me. Sorry for getting all bent out of shape.

One respected member of the RX-7 community owns/owned a GTUs with a factory sunroof. I BELIEVE he's the original owner and fought to get it ordered that way?

On the Infini cars, what made the 3 VS the 4? My sunroofless TII ride needs a name. Was thinking "TURBOIIs" or "GTUt" and it seems that "GTUt" was winning out.

Actually, I haven't had much luck at all finding Infini details over the years. I know the Infini IV had the wheels, special color, no sunroof, no DTSS, reduced sound deadening...

Don't sweat it, I need a good chewing now and then!

I was told by the mazdaspeed rep that all GTUs had no sunroof from factory and any sunroofed GTUs was after market or so on. But it is all good.

Yo,

Faster7, I'm just giving you a hard time. Anyone who doubts the All Encompassing Greatness that is the GTUs model RX-7 must be Set Straight with The Quickness. *grin*

Every GTUs I've seen with a sunroof have been aftermarket. The only factory option on the car was air conditioning, to the best of my knowledge.

I still think they're worth searching out and buying, until the newer Renesis gets put in a 2 door, I think the GTUs was the best NA RX-7 made. Some say the 1984-85 GSL-SE, some say the 1986 Sport. I say GTUs 'cause I own one! *grin*

I heard somewhere that GTU's have TII 550cc injectors factory installed.

Check out the Infini thread from about a month back. We recieved very little information about the Infini III in the states, so most of what we know is about the IV. My guess is that they're pretty much the same. Although I do know that the Infini III came in white, rather than the blackish green color of the Infini IV. Beyond that... who knows? I wish we could get some Japanese forum members to go digging through old auto mags to find out!

I'm placing great faith in the fact that 99.999% of all GTUs's have no factory sunroof. This one particular case had some extra beef to it...Trying to track down who exactly it was that owned it. I'm certain they either griped until it got ordered that way or knew the orig. owner that did!

GTUs's with aftermarket sunroofs make me sick. At least I finally found a NICE grey headliner panel for my sunroofless project!

(That S5 Autotragic black on black cloth "GTU" with no sunroof would be great for my project...But at $3300, no thank you...Found that thing Sunday, got videos of it if anyone cares to see.)

Thanks for pointing me to the Infini thread!
