Depends on how much you go over, but considering this is a serious hypothetical, if you haven't already over-torqued it, just make sure you don't. If you already did, tell us by how much and if anything is noticeably wrong and we can help you remedy it.
Anyway, to answer your question, significant torque over spec will probably screw up the threads on either the nut or shaft, both very bad. Insignificant torque (within spec), well, it's within spec. Moderately out of spec, it may work fine for a while, but could cause catastrophic failure after it's had time to ponder when would be the worst conceivable time to fail, and fail hard.
As always, do it once, right.

well we over torqued it that if we try to tighten it, theres no resistance, same thing if loosening. going either ways goes no where. when i look off the flywheel stopper and turned the flywheel and front portion of the engine, it seems fine. i dont know what else to say ??? hopes its not bad

If the threads on the shaft are fucked, the engine will have to come apart to install another shaft.

It was already in, I ask fuster if this was alright, I loosen to take a look at it. We were like **** it. Lack of common sense to realize that we fucked up.
