what IF i over torqued the flywheel nut?

what will happen if i over torqued the flywheel nut?

SpeedOfLife 11-25-07 12:42 AM

Depends on how much you go over, but considering this is a serious hypothetical, if you haven't already over-torqued it, just make sure you don't. If you already did, tell us by how much and if anything is noticeably wrong and we can help you remedy it.

Anyway, to answer your question, significant torque over spec will probably screw up the threads on either the nut or shaft, both very bad. Insignificant torque (within spec), well, it's within spec. Moderately out of spec, it may work fine for a while, but could cause catastrophic failure after it's had time to ponder when would be the worst conceivable time to fail, and fail hard.

As always, do it once, right.

well we over torqued it that if we try to tighten it, theres no resistance, same thing if loosening. going either ways goes no where. when i look off the flywheel stopper and turned the flywheel and front portion of the engine, it seems fine. i dont know what else to say ??? hopes its not bad :scared:

RETed 11-25-07 02:04 AM

How do you know you overtorqued it?
Were you cranking on it with a torque wrench?

theres no resistance after few turns on either side, we used the RB flywheel breaker bar.

So... you tightened down the flywheel, and now the flywheel nut just freespins on the shaft? You didn't happen to cross-thread the nut did you?

If the threads on the shaft are fucked, the engine will have to come apart to install another shaft.

FuStEr 11-25-07 02:20 AM

not sure if the nut cross thread, the nut freespins but only with the flywheel nut bar, i need a check tomorrow, i hope its the nut and not the eshaft >.<

Stanello 11-25-07 02:24 AM

Not to a dick but, are you sure you've tightened it all the way? How did you tighten it?

I was there, I turned the crank pulley, it turned the flywheel, and we turned the flywheel and we heard the rotor compressing. Also the thread looked messed up before we put in the flywheel nut.

FuStEr 11-25-07 02:27 AM

tighten with the rb flywheel nut bar. used weight to tighten it, didn't hear nothing snap so it might be cross thread, at least i hope so

thanks for the info so far

It was already in, I ask fuster if this was alright, I loosen to take a look at it. We were like fuck it. Lack of common sense to realize that we fucked up.

lesson learned:wallbash:

no tools or space to fix things FTL

New thread title: Tweedle dee and Tweedle dum's engine build

So, you put the nut on the fucked up shaft and just cranked on it? Jesus, you should have been able to spin it on by hand, then tighten it to spec.

mazdaworks 11-25-07 02:20 PM

goodluck with ur build my friend

turbine 11-25-07 08:16 PM

if i had to guess i would say that the nut is a much softer metal then the e shaft, so you might be able to get a new nut. lol good luck

What ever happened to this build lmao i need updates

FührerTüner 04-25-19 08:02 AM

His threads after this he was looking for an eshaft, and the last thread was selling his PowerFC. I'm guessing he cut his losses.

KompressorLOgic 04-26-19 10:06 PM

Raise from the dead, thread! I needed a good laugh today

Even if he fixed the car, chances are good that in the intervening 12 years he found a way to kill it again.

 I was thinking the same thing.... Hard for me to imagine the level of stupid that would be required to strip a flywheel nut :icon_no2:
