what in the heck?!
hey guys, I just put a open air filter on my s4 NA. I got in the car and started it up, thing idles for a while. Mine doesn't shoot up to 3000 like the FAQ says so I tried giving it a little gas to help it along. Thing just stalls right out. I went up front and checked everything again, AMM connection and vacuum tubing, nothing wrong. So I go and start the car again. This time it immediately stalls after starting up. I know I didn't miss anything up front so I tried again. This time it just turned over maybe half a turn and CLICK CLICK. Everythings dead, no warning lights or anything. I go out and check the main fuse, it is fine. Infact I can't find a blown fuse on the car. Only other thing I had done before starting it up was tightening the alternator belt... Anyone know what is going on? Battery is still holding ~13 volts.

AFM plugged in tightly? Pins bent?
Vacuum hose left unplugged? Such as the one for the BAC/AWS?
Sounds like your battery might also be marginal, which explains the lack of power after several attempts at starting. Or, the terminals are loose...

thanks for the help guys. I checked the AFM, a red/black wire IIRC 2nd from the left had pushed itself back and wasnt making contact with the AFM connector. I double checked the vacuum connections and found nothing wrong. It did power up for a second but as soon as I tried to turn the key to start it clicked out again. Could my main relay be screwing up? I'm going to try another battery because this one is reading 12.2 volts now

Did you reposition the AFM at a weird angle when you installed the filter? If you did, the door may be hanging up inside the AFM, screwing with the ECU...
Sounds like you still have a bad connection somewhere near the AFM, though. You can check out the AFM input at the ECU to verify that the signal is getting there, if you want. See FSM for ECU pin #...

ok a little update, the battery was bad. So I stuck the one in from my 3000 pound swedish battery charger. Now its turning over but no fire. I'm not getting anything from the tac while it's turning over. I put the AMM grid side up.

It sounds like your battery is dead (at least the starting problems). It'll hold a charge, report proper voltage, but as soon as you demand a load from it, it dies out, only to bounce back when you let the load off. I've had a battery do that before - replaced it, things worked fine.

ok yet another confusing development. I busted out my ECU code checker (the one from teamfc3s.org) and both lights just stay solid on all the time... Time to get another ECU? When diagnosing this cars first no-start situation, the code puller wouldn't come up with anything, just off all the time, and the ECU was bad.

sounds like you had a problem with the AFM, flooded the car trying to start it, and killed the battery.... if you are sure of your AFM connections ... do some Unflooding procedures.. try push starting it
