What happened to all the cargo covers?

I remember looking into getting one for my S5 GTU from Mazda back in 1996 or so when they still had them in stock, and they were about $400. That's probably another reason they weren't popular.
According to the '90 dealership brochure, they were standard on GXL and Turbo II but not the GTU.
Soldave, that custom carbon fiber one you have looks pretty nice. Years ago, I made one out of fiberboard with a wooden reinforcing beam between the hinge pins then I covered it with black carpeting. Problem is it was pretty heavy and the weight of it eventually stripped the screws that held in those plastic ledges on the sides of the hatch. Cargo covers are nice to have for keeping people from seeing what's in your hatch though.
