Question What to expect on a high milage engine...

I recently purchased a 1987 Rx-7 GXL N/A. Since Monday I've been searching for just a really broad answer to my question. What to expect will be the first problem with my engine. I will do a flush, replace sensors, change tires, and paint it. But what will happen if I wait until summer to schedule a rebuild for my engine?

FAQ's help a little, I've read it.

How many miles are on the engine? what was the condition of the car when you bought it?
I would suggest doing the usual tune-up, drain and flush the fluids, check and or replace the belts if they need too, spark plugs that sort of thing.
But if you are already planning on a rebuild there must be a bigger problem I imagine or just high mileage?
