What is the easiest way to clean the aux ports?

Just trying to find out what the easiest steps are to cleaning the 5th and 6th ports without going through the steps in the haynes manual.

Calls for taking the VDI and dynamic chamber off etc....

really that is the only way to fully clean and lube them I believe you COULD shoot some PB blaster or WD or what have you onto the solid bearing where the ports enter the manifold and then turn them back and forth a few times, but without taking the manifold off and putting it on the bench, thats about all you'll be able to do

Son of a mother! Damn, not what I was hoping to hear. What and how many gaskets will I be needing. Any pitfalls I need to be ready for and should I assume good ole MURPHY will be lending a hand as well

This gonna be a difficult task?

not too dificult, you'll need to pull the intake, TB, upper man. VDI, and lower man. (you'll need gaskets for all these)

Plus you might end up with some incidentals, I.e. a cuople vac lines that broke due to age or things of that nature...

Not a HUGE job, with all the tools present and no big hangs ups like busted bolts, stripped nuts etc you shuold be able to do the whole job neatly and clean everythign up in a full day, maybe spilling into a weekend project if you really want to take your time

As a side note, when I cleaned mine I soaked them in a degreaser (or something similar, been a while) first, then cleaned them with a medium softness brush. Made it a hell of a lot easier.

Okay....good to hear. So...I'm looking at five gaskets then...

My only downfall is that I live in an apartment community. So I'll be doing it outside in the parking lot. I think if I'm rather discrete and neat about things I'll be okay, but it still bites the big one. Good thing we have two cars in case things take a little longer than expected. I think I have been without these ports since I've owned the car......I'm ashamed of myself.

Thanks for the good advice. It's good to hear from someone that's been there.

PS- Just for kicks...how much would a garage charge someone to do this job?

well Im showing an allowed 8-10 hours for everything, plus the cost of gaskets (would vary) plus some shop material...so depending on the labour rate anywhere from 700 to 1000 bucks...

But an experienced rotary shop might cut you a better deal given the relative familiairity as well as know how for sourcing good priced parts

okay, yeah that's kinda scary. Good thing I am mechanically equiped upstairs.
Just wish I had a garage and a little more toolidge. I'll be tackling this myself, but thanks for the reality check.

Might be a dumb question...probably is....as far as these gaskets and possible vac lines etc...best bet madatrix or can I get away with getting them at the dealer?

I paid 90 something dollars for the WHOLE gasket set for my S5 n/a back in the day...

that will give you everything you need plus more for down the road (BTW its cheaper then pieceing them together....much cheaper)

As far as the vac line go - autozone or the like for some silicone hoses - BAM - good to go

When you put the gaskets back on, lube them with Vasoline or something similar. That'll let you take them off easily in the near future if you screw something up (realize you left a sleeve out or something).
