wow this thread has had the title "what do with 5 grand" all this time. how grammatically incorrect. well, the 5 grand will have to wait a few months, but as for now, i'm stickin to kyb agx's and racing beat springs and when i get the money, i'll swap in a t2 motor.

Why swap in the TII motor? I thought you wanted a more fuel economical car? Remember, you also need to put in PREMIUM for most modded TII applications!

My recommendation for you is to find someone local with a setup you like and drive that to see what it is like, then decide. Don’t spend 5K on a car that costs not even half that, unless you are concrete in what you're planning to do, and know where your big money in the future is coming from. 5K is a LOT of money.

I have owned MANY RX-7s, of all trims, personally I like my S5 N/A 'vert most of all. That’s right, I'd rather drive my N/A heavy 'vert then my modded TII.

It's all about preference! Find out what you want before you just start throwing money everywhere! Seriously, save the cash until you know exactly what you are getting into.

I fix peoples RX-7s all the time too. I've seen kids come and go, dumping cash into their cars until they explode, and then they lose interest and sell them super cheep, the money and enjoyment of the car lost forever.

But seriously, the joy of working on cars (for me at least) isn’t the end result, of just going out and slapping on a bunch of high dollar parts, accelerating really fast, and acting like a jerk in front of the coffee shop, telling everyone how fast your car is.

It's learning how everything works, building it yourself, and saying "I did this."

Learn about it, rebuild the engine yourself, take some welding classes, make your own manifolds, and learn about manifold design. Try different things, blow some stuff up, learn, and make some friends on the way, and have some stories to tell!

oops all gone. And he didn't even get to I/C, injectors, pump, regulator, suspension, rims.........

for 5 thousand I would say just get a decent TII and some reliability stuff
Man, those prices are insane!! Try this:

Motor rebuild and porting: $1300 (non-DIY, http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/ lots of people have quite good experiences with Kevin Landers, and yes, he has warranties.)

Big turbo: $200 to $400 (Lets save some money by not buying new, or ball bearing. Head over to your local turbo shop, or local car clubs, and get some nice condition cheep turbos! Can't find them? Grab a smaller diesel turbo (don't go TOO big)! There’s a shop right around my work that sells huge diesel turbos for around $200! Seriously, call around, check your yellow pages! Sometimes people sell BNR turbos for a few hundred!)

I've seen the HKS iron log for $200 on eBay. But why not fabricate? Local fabricators here don't charge too much, I could get the exhaust mani full custom for $400 to $600 if I went to a shop.

Standalone (MegaSquirt PlugnPlay): $450 (Special introductory price!) Why go Haltech? Seriously?

We still got a lot of cash left for the extras!

I built my TII for even LESS then that, just by finding people who were selling the right things, either locally or here at the for-sale section of RX-7club.

yeah i kinda contradicted myself huh. well, i'm just going on what a lot of the locals have been telling me. a friend of mine swapped a t2 into an 84 rx-7 n/a and suggested i'd do the same. however, my local shop (sidepex) tells me i should stick with n/a as anything faster will jus cost more gas and i should just fix my suspension and leave it at that so i can retain some resale value.

Yes to a certain extent I gave high numbers - but it was in regards to posts about using the products I gave prices on.

And by the sounds of the original poster - I doubt he will be fabbing and welding his own exhaust manifolds and such.

My main point was that in the market of new parts when considering an entire build - its VERY easy to get ahead of yourself and end up with a half-built project that you can't afford to finish....which is the last thing anyone wants to see - I just didn't want to give him any false hope.

But yes - the thing *can* be done for less, but my post was in response to someone who seemed to be implying that this guy could take 5 g's and put full suspension in and have a brand spanking new engine, TII driveline and 350+ capable power-adders - which is just too close to the line of truth for me.....

it can be done for less, but it can also be done for more if you go crazy. the last owner of my car blew something around 10k in add on.
but you could say i did it for under 5k by buying his car for 4k with all mods in sig. rofl.

i'm not expert but i have a friend who's swapped frames and engines and well...knows everything there is to know about 1st-2nd gens and he'd be doing the work on my car. BUT i think i'm just going to fix my suspension and leave the car alone as a daily driver. the only reason why i've been looking into some engine mods is because i got beat by a 91 4 door i4 accord sedan the other day and it pissed me off.

How's the compression? If the motor's good I would do the following:

Springs + Shocks- ~1000 (prob less)
clutch, pressure plate, flywheel - ~1000
Nitrous- ~5-600
Wheels and tires - ~1000
Exhaust - ~1000
Total: ~~$4600

Rest is regular maintenance...

Evryone wants to go fast first.

Restore the car then go fast.

All new bushings struts springs fix any rust. Broken things around, brakes the lines ruber lines vacc hoses clean BACV clean the car up detail it. Get a nice good reliable clean car. new plugs wires test all the electrical is in spec TPS is good and so on.

Now that your car is clean reliable safe then try and go fast.

furiousbob - Our cars do not have frames. What frame are you swaping?

nitrous - nitrous on my n/a??

clutch, pressure plate, flywheel - what would these do for me? i know the flywheel helps the shifting and the clutch eliminates my long clutch stroke, but...?

Although there's more options for wheels if you go 5 lug, decent wheels that fit 4-lugs can be found. Just takes a bit of time and effort. I found a nice 16" gun metal 5 spoke rim set on Ebay. Stock TII wheel size/offset, too. And they're light

and +1 for bushings and reliability first!

Light it on fire, dance around the corpse, then spend $4983.52 on hookers, booze and gambling.
