What is the difference between...

a GTU, GXL and SE?

I'm looking around for a rx7, but I don't know what I want. The TIIs seem to be an obvious choice, but hard to come by and somewhat expensive. I have an option is pick a GTU, GXL or SE with a buyer but I dunno the difference. Its a bit difficult because I've been dealing with him over email.

Anyway, which is the base-model, possible options for each, etc. Specific is good!

Thanks.

I am assuming you are talking about '88s here as all three were available in 88.

The SE was the base model, smaller brakes, 14 inch 4 lug wheels, strippy interior, some got sunroofs and air but it was not common.

The GXL is the luxury coupe. It typically had every option, including a useless, adjustable suspension, 4 pot brakes, Aero 15 inch wheels, sunroof, air, power steering, and on the 86-88 models the much coveted LSD. Many also had leather, and rear wipers.

The GTU in 88 was the sport model, with heavy duty suspension (shared with the T2 and the 'vert), 4 pot brakes, LSD, Aero wheels, but not the upgraded stereo or other pure luxury items found on the GXL.

The GTU in 89 and 90 was the base model again, but with 5 lug wheels. It was very strippy.

The GTUs (note the small "s") in 89 and 90 was similar to the 88 GTU and 86-87 GS or Sport model, except perhaps a touch more performance oriented. Stripped of all the extras, but including the suspension and wheels from the T2 and the much coveted 4.30 rear end, made it almost as quick as the T2 without the extra complexity of the turbo.

great thanks for the info!

You are right, the cars are 88s. He has 5 or 6 rx7s for sale. A few SEs, a couple GXLs and one GTU. All of them are second gens.

I know now to stay away from the SEs.

I think I'm gonna take a look at the GXLs...the GTU sounds great with its suspension, but I like creature comforts.

Thanks icemark
