Hi, I'm proud to be a new member of the rotary community, but the keys I got when purchased the car were just cheap copies and look really dinky. Anyone know where I can get a bitchin' set of keys for my car?

Dealer sells blanks. Note you might wanna get 1 copy at first of your copies, not "ground to match your VIN #'s key layout." If (and only if) this doesn't work, then go with the new from scratch keys.

I have a pretty cool "butterfly knife" key.

It's made by "weapon R"

Just make sure you have a locksmith cut any expensive blanks, NOT Walmart.

There's also a nice aluminun key floating around ebay somewhere.

I "think" the FD efini keys can be cut to work on our cars. I was planning on doing something like that. =)

FD key is only too thick once or twice.

Once the key hole has been stretched a little or the locks have a couple years on them it works fine.

I use efini keys on my vert.

So, this is the Efini Key:


so then you trim it down a little to be closer to the FC key in length (basicly you just cut off the tip section):

Then you have the key cut at your local Mazda dealer or locksmith (however a locksmith will require a good key to cut from, while the mazda dealer will just need the 4 digit key code).



and presto, just slide it in. It will be a little stiff at first, but loosens with use.

How come? Mine works fine and it keeps me from hanging a bunch of crap off my ignition switch.

1. is the keycode within the regular vin number?
2. will the Mazda dealer have the efini keys in stock?

I had a problem when I had keys cut for my car. the 1st being they cut an FD key, and it wouldn't fit for the life of me. 2nd being when the FC key was cut, appearantly my locks had been changed, and it didn't work.

hmm... couldn't find them on corksport.com. but i'll look around for them. so, when the people at the mazda dealership call me an idiot, what do i tell them? do it anyways?

No. Get them from the RX7store.net at the top of this page (http://66.216.67.51/product.asp?0=200&1=224&3=34)
The key shop cutter will not trim down the key. I used small bolt cutters and a file. You can get the key cut without shortening/trimming it, however it will stick out about 1/2 further than the way the FC key normally fits.
The dealer won't have a clue
usually $14 (plus shipping) for a Efini key and maybe $1 to cut it.

But I didn't want the generic non OEM Mazda key. I wanted something cast like an OEM key and happen to really like the triangle shape of the Efini key. All the Mazda dealers in CA that I tried did not have the OEM key blanks anymore (except funny enough 10AE key blanks, but they are the same as the pre 83 keys and truck keys anyway).

So $20 or so was worth it for me (my last Lexus key was over $75, so $20 or so seems a bargin). Depending on your budget you may consider that too much for you to pay for a key. I didn't

Why does the 10AE use different keys?

My local mazda dealer cut me pretty stock looking keys that work everything but the glovebox. My original worn key works everything (except of course no key works the driver's door, have to use the alarm)

Because it is the 10thAE.

The normal key is the one on the left (type A), the 10thAE in the middle (type B) and the valet key is on the right. The valet key only opens the doors, and ignition (and maybe the hatch), but won't unlock the storage bins or the glove box.

THAT's a 10AE key?? I thought they'd have a nifty little logo or something. That's lame. My GTUs actually came with a type B key, didn't realize it was the same as a 10AE key though...
