But there are two lines going into the top of the canister.

One large tube and one smaller tube. Can you just safely cap both of those off? I extended both lines and ran them under the car .. but i would like to cap the lines off at the source... just for simplicity

the one goes to the intake manifold and can be capped. The other goes all the way back to the tank..which can be vented back there. In stock form the canister is the only way for the tank to vent...you still need a vent.

Sorry that I haven't looked at the FSM in a while but do any of you suppose that this canister has something to do with the fuel smell in the oil. If the canister was full could gas somehow make it into the engine while parked? I am concerned with my oil since in gets very tihin and smells of fuel between changes. Only other thing I can think of is that it is leaky injectors dumping fuel into the manifold every time I shut the car off. I'm actually doing the fuel injector test as I type.
