I have heard talk of mystical engine block heaters and magical keyhole illuminators.....

If such things exist then what models had 'em? How can i get mine to work, providing i have 'em??

Your GXL should have the light. My little cover on the keylock is busted, but i can still see the light at the keyhole. There is also another light above the ignition key switch too.

The heater block, it's just a dealer option

Yeah all the GXL models had the lights, and my 88 GTU has it as well. Although I am not positive, I thought the T2 and verts had them as well.

Generally when they are not working they have just become unplugged in the door. Remove the door panel and see, if it is still there, and if the light next to the ignition key still works, then the bulb is probably bad.
