start off with a full tune up... spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, oil change and filter. coolant flush and new mazda thermostat. Redline oil in the tranny and diff. check the timming and TPS.
that is a good couple hunred bucks right there. and needs to be done before any moding.

Somewhat cheap mods:
1) $20-30 K&N Universal Cone Filter (2.75" ID)
http://www.knfilters.com/universal/universal.htm
$20 HKS Cone Filter Adapter (needed for 87-88 TII's)

2) $100 Fuel Cut Defenser (You can get used ones for $50)
http://66.216.67.51/subcatmfgprod.asp?0=208&1=244&2=-1
$50-300 Turbo Boost Gauge (Fuel Cut Defenser gives false reading on stock boost gauge)
http://66.216.67.51/subcat.asp?0=212
3) $100 Ghetto Catback Exhaust with NO mufflers from your local muffler shop (works with gutted pre-cat, but may be too loud with aftermarket downpipe and/or gutted main cat).
I also have to agree with Scott 89t2, as the basics are required for reliability, and a full tune-up may actually yield quite a performance gain in these old cars.

The cheapest real mods with the biggest bang for the buck are replacing the precat with a downpipe and the main cat with a midpipe. A TII will get a large performance increase by doing this because you're reducing back pressure which results in the turbo producing more boost. Stock boost is 5.5psi, the fuel is cut off at 8.6psi. After this point you need a fuel cut defensor and fuel mods becuase the ECU cannot opperate properly beyond fuel cut. Check out the link to the rx7store at the top and you'll see what's available.
And yes, people hear are generally hostile towards newbies (and everyone else...), so try not to take it to heart. Check out the Canadian section too, we're nicer there.

I think the cheapest thing would be to learn how to drive, launch, heel-toe ect, learn to feel the car and react to it, without that u will be slow nomatter what
