What brand oil filter do you use?
I've used Amsoil filters for years.
I'd never use the Mazda filter. While I'm sure it's good quality, it's tiny! Obviously the bigger a filter is the more contaminants it is able to remove before the filter becomes blocked enough to reduce flow. I've seen tests where these now-common baby-sized stock filters are clogged enough to operate the bypass valve (passing unfiltered oil) BEFORE the factory recommended change interval! A much bigger quality filter like Amsoil or K&N is a much better idea.

Right now I'm running Three oil filters. The first two are Fram HP1 They say there are for racing? Anyway they are OK for now. After the Frams the oil goes thourgh a K&N as a last chance filter. I think that this setup works well because the Frams take out the big chunks and the K&N takes out the fine dirt. You can look at my web sight for pics it you want. I put the Frams inline with the oil cooler (just after). Works good!

.
I think Wix makes the NAPA filters. I think they are equal or higher quality than the rest. And I will never buy Fram again - they have low filtration surface (fewer pleats) and cheap construction.
I use Amsoil, heard their stuff is REALLY good.
Hey NZConvertible, what's the Amsoil filter number you use, mine is SDF13, which is a real SMALL filter. I just want to make sure I got the correct one, thanks!

i didnt have time to head to a Mazda Dealer to get a OEM filter so i went to Shucks and looked up the # for Fram and i think it was 3923A or something which happens to be the same number for a Honda filter. So i just grabbed a Honda OEM filter from work for free and used that.
I'ts funny everybody's slamming Fram with no documented horror stories to support them...been using Frams since I bought the car with 95,000 on it...it's now got 182,000 on a still strong original engine with good compression numbers...I think we should worry more about the quality of oil we're putting in the car than the filter brand. And of course the oil change intervals...
Here's some reading:

Make sure you read the following:

hey Turbonut- please don't tell me you believe everything you read on the internet, especially some cheesy-looking microsoft word document with "name withheld to protect the innocent" crap, and another so-called "test" written by a guy who thinks reverse engineering a filter is gonna verify performance parameters...proof is in the pudding, so to speak, in almost 200,000 miles of driving with Fram filters on the two cars I own, I have never had a problem with them leaking, falling apart, or otherwise failing me...same with the fuel and air filters, (although I use a K&N air filter on my rx-7)...I think all this internet "info" was started years ago by a competitor with the intent of grabbing market share. Think about it- if the filter was a piece of ****, it wouldn't have lasted as a brand this long... word of mouth among professional mechanics (which I consider myself since I get paid to do it) would have killed it a long time ago...
Wayne:
Take a breather. You wanted some info, and that is what I presented to you. I've used the Fram filters on both my Grand Cherokees. Mine has 213,000 no problems, and my wife's V-8 85,000 no problems. I've used the small Fram (3806 for the FD) on my S5 TI, no problems. Since I've had KD install a Mazda eng (Late 2002) I've used the Mazda filters, just like I did when I purchased the car new, then I switched at a later time.
I've cut many filters apart to examine the internals. Quite a difference just as the report indicates.
Actually, in all my years of driving, and the hundreds of thousands of miles we've driven, I've never encountered a problem, nor have I ever worked on a car that had a problem directly related to the oil filter. I've seen 2 Purolators split open. One was because the relief valve stuck and pressure built. The other was struck by a stone and punctured the case.
