Does it seem odd that when I change my oil, the pressure guage reads around 100 psi for like 30 seconds?? Is that right????

well I only changed my oil 1 time since I got the car. When I changed the oil/filter, started her back up. Little bit rough for a few seconds then I watched the pressure guage go to about 100-110 for like 10-20 seconds.

pressure is fine otherwise, 20-30psi at idle, 60 psi (give or take 5) at 3k rpm.

I use a K&N oil filter. So far I like it better than anything I have tried.

Wow I'm surprised at how many people would still want to use Fram after being exposed by so many articles and studies as a very poorly built filter. Oh well, some filtration is still better than none, I guess. K&N came up very good as did Mobil 1, which was best of the group.
As for original Mazda filters, wasn't there an issue with the pressure regulator opening up due to excessive pressure upon initial startup, thereby allowing unfiltered oil to get to the motor?

I have been told that the BYPASS on the MAZDA oem filter is actually set quite a bit HIGHER than most aftermarket filters.
yes current FRAM's are CRAP (have been ever since Allied/Signal took over) but in the old days were among the BEST.
Purolater is the best of the Discount store brands and also produces most of PepBoys' ProLine brand filters.

I also use the K&N...spendy, but seems to be worth it. Every time I change my oil it looks brand new still. Plus it has that handy nut on top which makes removing it so easy!

The tests I have seen have given me a sound piece of mind with Purolator Pure One filters. I used to use the TII filters because they didn't have a product number for the FDs. I recently went to buy some Toyota corrolla filters(I just bought the Greddy oil relocation kit) and when looking through the catalogue they finally make them for FDs now :p

K&N. Like the idea that filter doesn't have to fill before system gets full pressure at startup.

Isn't it w/ either every or every other oil change?
And I thought mazda OEM filter was best.

Hmmmm....where are the articles related to the poor quality of the Fram filters?

I use Fram in my '87 TII, also used it in my '82 1st gen for over 188 K miles...engine was still running strong when I sold it! I can't say anything about the quality...only that I have used probably 75 filters over the life of my cars and have stuck with Fram almost exclusively and never had a single problem.

OEMs will recommend every other oil change. Due to cheapness of filters (Mazda OEM for around $5, Purolator Pure One for about the same), I would change the filter at every oil change. Why screw around?
