What additional gauges do you run?
I'm in the process of pondering what instrumentation I want on my car (S4 NA). I want a fairly complete readout of what's going on with the engine, for personal curiosity, monitoring, and blinken-lights value. I plan to eventually have my car in trackable condition (needs new brakes first), as well as doing autocross, so I want to be able to monitor things at sustained high power settings.
Right now, I'm planning to build my own A/F meter with lean-run alarm, tie into the injector signals to display duty cycle, intake air temperature gauge (or more than one), water temperature, vacuum, possibly oil temperature, and fuel pressure.
This is a long-term project, as I can't afford all this stuff right now. Some of the stuff will be off the shelf, some will be custom built.
What gauges do you find most useful, and what would you suggest?

1. Water Temp - You tap this one before the thermostat incase it gets stuck you can see right away on the new setup before problems arise...
2. Oil Pressure - You can get an adapter for where the oil filter screws in to allow after market gauges to be used.
3. EGT is also a nice one to have... to make sure things are not melting down..
4. Oil Temp (or Boost if you have turbo... which you dont...)
I have.. Water temp, EGT and Boost in my setup. Along with I made the engine code checker and wired it into just above the gauges. So I can see if somethings throwing codes right away..

How does one read engine codes? I've searched, but obviously haven't found the "magic term" to search for. I don't have emissions stuff, so I'm sure it would be complaining somewhat about that.
I have an oil pressure gauge in the car that seems to be working just fine - it reads around 30 at idle, around 60 at cruise, and moves freely. So I'm not too worried about that one.
Where does one mount an oil temperature sender? Oil pan, or oil cooler inlet, or ?

The easiest way is to buy an adapter that places sell which you put where your oil filter is. Then it has two spots already in it pre tapped to 1/8th NPT (standard for most setups.) just screw it into place, put your senders in place, then put your filter back on... I'll try and find a link to purchase one. I beleive this is the way most are doing it. I am still looking for a nice spot to put the gauge. I don't want any pillars...

I have water temp, oil temp, and oil pressure on the non-turbo. On the turbo I have those and boost.
As far as most useful... on a turbo, a boost gauge is obviously the most useful.
For the non-turbo, the most important gauge to me is the water temp gauge. The stock temp gauge is lousy, and the aftermarket gauge saved my engine once when my thermostat failed.
