What is this?

I am posting this 'cause I don't know what this is and wanted to know what this sensor does and is it a must have.. my friend has two rx7's and neither of them have it. he'll probably see this later lol

its a water temp sensor for emissions stuff.

i only screwed it in half way cause its extremely hard and i dont wanna crack a new radiator :o
