What is this?

Is this the Pulsation Dampner (the round thing the arrow is pointing at)? I have been getting a fuel smell in the cockpit and under the hood recently, and poor city gas mileage, and I've heard people report the same symptoms when their pulsation dampers were on the way out... When you touch it while the car is idling, should it "pulse"? When I touch it I don't feel anything.
Help would be much appreciated! (and I know this has been covered before... I couldn't find a decent picture of the PD anywhere, and I want to make sure that is it).

Ok, that's odd....I just ran outside and looked on my car....in that spot on that fuel rail I've got just a banjo bolt, on the other end is were my PD was (banjo bolt now). I've got an '87 TII.

The "thing" I pointed out in the picture feels like it has a plastic cap on it. I didn't pull it off or anything (afraid to). Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what it felt like. I don't think it was metal.

The PD's do have a plastic cap over the top of them. Pull it off, but be careful....the screw in mine had come out and fell out of the cap when I pulled it off. Didn't matter since I was getting rid of it anyway, but you may want to keep yours.

I'm guessing that screw isn't supposed to fall out like it did for you? Is that a sign that it's busted?

hehe...yeah, it really shouldn't fall out, but it happens a lot. If you do a search for "pulsation damper" then you can find a lot more info than I can remember at the moment.

Already searched (plus read the threads on this page, lol). Just wanted to be clear on whether or not I knew where the PD was located. Thanks for the help guys!
