were do i mount racing harness?

I am putting racing seats and harness in my car. What do i mount the harness to? Is a rear sway bar like the cusco one stong enough? and is that ideal?

You need a roll cage if you are going to be using race car type harnesses. Corksport has one available.

That's a strut bar you're referring to, not "sway bar".

I make a bar that simply bolts across the interior of the car for just this purpose. PM for details and a price...and it IS strong enough to give the same support in an accident that the stock seatbelt perches give.

The top straps mount to the roll cage, and the bottom straps mount to the floor at the stock bolt location or at a custom location in the floor that has been reinforced with a steel backing plate. Make sure your setup is legal for whatever kind of racing you plan on, as there are little nitnoid things such as the angle of the straps, number and width of straps, size and thickness of the backing plate, the seat being mounted against the roll cage or not being mounted against the roll cage, etc. It would really ruin your day to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a setup that you can't use.

In which racing class is that legal?

no idea...don't care either. I make them to specs given to me by my customers. They say "it needs to mount "here" and be "this thick" and made of "this material" and...etc" and I make it.

When somebody's mom and her lawyer come calling, you're going to begin to care and keep on caring for a LONG time while you pay her off for the value of her dead son.

The only answer that should be given for the question "How do I mount these belts?" is "Mount them exactly as the manufacturer recommends." Anything else leaves you open for a share of the liability pie...

Apparently everyone overlooked this comment, so I'll make sure it gets seen again.

A harness with no cage is a bad idea. If by chance your car flips, we'll be talking to a quadrapalegic.

That's mostly true, but not 100%. It IS possible to mount the belts without a cage and still have the geometry correct without a cage, but it takes some work and may or may not pass inspection by your local sanctioning body

I originally made the bars as a structural support in the MKIII Supra...part of a 3-bar setup. People, however, started using them for a harness mount...and seem to be happy with it...so I make sure to add that this as a use. Mowever, I make sure to point out to everyone that I am not responsible for their stupidity. Also, it is not my place to assume that my potential customers are or are not running a full cage, as there are several people on this forum alone who have a bar like this for the harness PLUS a cage.

No one ever went into this in detail because it was a blanket statement dependant on way too many variables to be considered anything other than opinion.

I don't think it's an opinion, it is simple physics. A racing harness is designed to stabilize your body in the seat, so that you can't move from left to right. Now, when your car rolls and your roof crushes in, you cannot shift to the left or right to avoid it. The roof will smash right down on your head as you are strapped to the seat.

just to post it...because I got a number of inquiries and can't remember who all was interested...

...and...

That's the unpadded one in my Supra. They're pretty straight foward. The padding makes them look a little neater.
