Thumbs down Went to pick up my new Rx-7...

Well a friend of mine found me a "decent" 86 GXL with 110k.mi. about two hours away from me so I decided to go look at it a couple weeks ago (Cohasset, MN). The exterior wasn't in too bad of shape except for a few rust spots around the fenders but nothing I couldn't fix. The interior was beautiful. The owner had a shop vac tube for an intake tube....MAJOR vacuum leak (no big deal). Since we didn't have a battery or tube, I couldn't fire it up to hear it run but the owner assured me that it will run perfect with a new intake tube. We agreed on $650 to pick up the car. I gave him 100 to hold on to the car for a couple weeks.
Two weeks pass and I was ready with cash in hand. I bought a battery, intake tube, plugs, and some spare vacuum line and my friend and I set off to pick the car up.
We immediately installed the new tube and spark plugs. She fired right up but had trouble getting it to idle (tested: bad tps). Also noticed an excessive amount of white smoke coming out the exhaust.
Not long after we fired it up, it started screaming at us to add coolant....did so but got an unreasonable amount of air bubbles coming out of the cap while running. Noticed that there was coolant leak on the linecoming out of the rear cast iron under the UIM (probably what caused what is coming up). So things aren't looking good at all. After it died and we let it sit for a couple minutes, we tried to fire it up again and got nothing.... Pulled the plugs, and whaddya know, the plugs were drenched in coolant, fried water jacket!! SOB! I then told the owner I don't want it and that I want the $100 back. He said that he will send it to me in 2 weeks (I say fat chance).
I guess the moral of the story is to be patient when buying a car. It was a poor judgement call on my part and I hope anyone who reads this won't make the same mistake I did.
So Im back on the market for another one.

Make sure you hear it run and drive it before you give him/her/it any money!

Yeah, when I bought my car it had a bit of white smoke. The owner told me it was too much premix and I didn't know any better at the time. I'm not to mad, though, because everything I wanted done to the car was already done and in great shape, so even with the rebuild I saved money over doing the mods myself.

well you are buying a 20 year old car for 650 bucks, what did you expect? Any rotary that has sat for a while is bound to have problems. I always suggest to people even when they are buying the few t2's I have sold that if you don't plan to do a rebuild then you should get another car. It does scare a few people off but then again IMHO you should always start off a new FC with a rebuild and rebuilt injectors. If you don't plan to do that buy another car with a piston motor.

I had already planned on rebuilding and porting anyways...I wanted to atleast drive the thing home first. After we yanked it out of the snow, we got a good luck under the back and the rearend was leaking fluid and the suspension was completely shot. Theres just too much to list. After monkeying with the engine, we determined that this would make a good parts car...not a driver.

Hold on, coolant was leaking under the LIM by the iron? You might just have a bad o-ring there ( http://www.mazdatrix.com/getprice.as...m=13-1130-8527 ). If that is bad, coolant will leak in that exact spot, and if the intake gasket is bad as well, it could definatly leak into the motor.

Check that first.

are you sure it was coolant on the plugs... usually the plugs are drenched in oil and gas... every rx7's plugs will be drenched in oil and gas when yuou pull them out. as for coolant leak that you could see its probly something simple like that o-ring

The hose that attaches to the nipple on the rear cast iron had a hole in it. It would have been easy to fix that.... I could see the coolant getting into the LIM if the gasket was bad, but that seems kindof far fetched. It was definitely coolant on the plugs, tasted sweet

Just talked to a guy about a mile down the road who has a 1st gen GS mint body and interior with no motor for 500. Thinking about S4 13b maybe turbo conversion.

It was obvious that he overheated the motor because I put a whole jug of coolant in there when we fired it up. He said that he drove it around and couldn't figure out what the buzzer was about....******* RETARD

at least these cars have sensors for these things .. im about to go pick up mine today from a lady for 500 buks 90 na 5spd onlything wrong is for some reason the idle is kind of jumpy if u hold ir around 3k it every other second u hear a very faint pop. and te rpm drops 100 then back up and continues this happens at any rpm ... i hope i dont have to rebuild but for 500 buks i can part out the tail lights and almost make back my money haha o well i miss my old rx7 so hopefully this one will be better than the last

Went and looked at the GS tonight, its not mint at all! About 10" dent on left front QP, abundant rust underneath and under passenger door, interior isnt complete, and it appears to have been started without the key recently. The search continues....

Those are only used with turbo motors, not N/A's.

Roundabout, did you get your money back?
