Question Well My Hood Vents What Ya Think!!

Well I been making and selling these hood vents for the FC3S and the people who have it love it and the people who don;t either wanna rag on them(hate) or want them..I would just like more feedback and opinions good or bad, feel free to post, but please no swearing..

My 300zx TT came with the hood proped up like that. I am going to change it soon. Makes the car look broke.

If it was a remote operated system and you had tests to prove that it would work without ill effects(other than looking plain stupid) I think it would be worth it. But otherwise I don't see a use for it. What happens when it rains there goes drivability for ya. Watter on electronics is a no no.

I think its a good idea, and if its raining it wont mess up, I've seen stuff just like this befor, it's like a poor mans inverted hood scoop. If i had the Money I'd buy them right now, but I'm really poor. It would be a little better if you did drop it about 1/4 of an inch, then I'd definately try to get it..

I'm pretty sure that jacking up the back of your hood like that sucks air in, not lets it flow out. It's like the idea behind cowl induction hoods.

from my understanding from a kid that i know that actaully did that on his subaru. says that in japan this is a common thing to help heat soak . but im not sure i want to believe him

this is a very old idea, nice brackets though

the title should have been cowl hood or something like that, this is not a vent, if you want vent, check out the scoot hood for an FD (if i ever get my hands on a fc, ill make embed the scoot hood scoops on to a cf fc hood)

Water does get in there. On my 300zx the MBC is in the back driver side of the engine bay. I just recently noticed it is rusting out after about a month of being there. It's not a RX-7, but I think the effect would be about the same.

well don't keep the MBC back there.

There are several high horsepower RX7s running around in Japan with this type of setup. It does help with airflow through the engine bay, that is why they do it.

yeah, it will help out, and especially if you have bad heating problems, hats why I wanted a cf fc inverted hood, like the fds have!!

one way to find out for sure.
Get a temperature gauge and stick it somewhere under the hood.
compare readings with hood unmodified and with hood modified.

i think its tacky. your cooling sytem was designed to and should be able to keep up with all your reasonable cooling needs with the hood fully closed, so i see this as superfilous and therfore RICE. nice gtus tho.

The biggest problem with that modification (as covered countless times on this forum) is that it raises the back end of the hood past the factory stops on the firewall

So in the event of a front end (straight head on, or offset) there is no protection from the hood being jammed backwards through the windshield and decapitating the driver and passenger.

See the stock hood location, the top of the firewall has a lip that is designed to prevent the hood from being jammed backwards in the event of a front end accident.

By raising the hood that way, you bypass that factory provision.

So you may think you car looks cool, and that the engine compartment has lower temps, but in reality you have destroyed the normal cooling air flow around the lower parts of the engine and transmission, and you have made your car into a death trap.

As a personal note (and not related to the forum at all): I hope that you get sued to all hell, by the family of the first person that gets killed by it, so that unsafe things like this do not ever get sold again.

alright first off for all u people that think that this has no cooling effect try this. when i bought my cf na hood for my tII it only had one spot for boltto screw into on each side because one of the threaded rivots on each side had fell out. i didnt think anything about because he gave me the rivots and bolts to go in there and i also know someone that has that gun so that i can get the other two put back in. but for the while that i was driving the car with just one bolt in each side whenever i would reach certian speed the back of the hood would lift up. it has hood pins in the front holding it down so i didnt worry to much, i just didnt go fast enough to make it lift up. i find this funny that all these people think that this is a high pressure area. if it were infactr a high pressure area then all that "pressure" would hold the hood down.
find someone that road races a fc professionaly, theres a good chance ul find one that has another big hole in the front for added air to cool everything. youll also notice that they have this done.
another way people acomplish this in other cars is just to remove the weather stripping but i dont think that will have much effect on our cars seeing theres not much space there anyway.

Ok I gues you all are a bit caught up in the coolness of the broken decapatator hood. But eheres what I have found.


#1 Posted from Mark and I think its the more impostant one beit the ******* thing works or not. IF you have your hood in that position you better be very carefull of your driving because there is a good chance that in the event of an accident that hood will take your head and maybe your passenger's. I am not getting in any guys car that has that thing on it. I kinda like having my brane connected to my body. It keeps things organized.

#2 That not only provides the ugliest mod to date(other than that stupid lazy/sleepy eye headlight mod which makes the car look broken) but it will allow Joe Shmoe to get in there at with little effort and take your hood off and mess your car up.

#3 Rain will get in there if you care to debate me about it please go out and drive with your sun roof craked open but not moved back. See how long it takes for water to get in. I bet you will come back a dripping idiot for thinking that watter doesn't get in.

#4 About the relative pressure in that area. Have you ever put your car on vent but left off the fan? guess where that little breaze comes from? that vent right about where the hood ends. Guess what kind of pressure that is? positive nucklehead yeah thats right. It may not be as much force as that in the back of the car wihen you have a wing designed for downforce but it IS positive pressure.

#5Temp decrease: Do you actually think that you should do something like this? the whole cooling system of the car is designed to work with the car's hood FLUSHLY planted where it is supposed to go! Guess who's car has temperature guages? Oh I don't know possibly could it be my own? yep. Guess what I tried one morning? leave the hood up to let the car's head escape while I come back. The temp raised around 12* F I closed the hood and guess what? It starts to lower temps, The temp dropped I would say IIRC a cool 15 or 20* in the engine bay.(This is not numbers for the CAI but the engine bay).


If there were cooling capabilities by raising the hood of a car you would see all the top racers having special hood parts being made. I have yet to see any damn thing from a racer that actually competes proffesionally. Also don't you think Ferrari and Lamborgini and Lotus and the lrest would have made something out of this majical mod? Guess it isn't worth it now eh?

You know, I was just about to post this. It seems like a fundamentally stupid idea to mount a hood like that. The hood latch is virtually no protection during an accident. I can totally see the hood slicing directly through the A pillars and into the necks of the occupents of the car. Or flying off and injuring some innocent bystander.

If you really, really, really want to vent the rear of th engine bay, cut vents into the firewall under the cowl.
