i did a little research after reading this post. seems like a bad idea man. your car will suck TERRIBLE in the rain, and imagine the snow, turning it will understeer like a bastard. i saw get a true LSD, more expensive, but a LOT safer. sure, welding it CAN be done, but having a welded diff explode in the case has also happened to people too.

The carrier is the same basic architecture as all of the other differentials you have welded. Just weld the pinion gears to the slide gears and you are done.

Yeah you don't weld the pinion gears. You weld the spider gears.

Sure, if you want the car not to move.

That’s a matter of terminology.
The “spider” is what holds the “pinion gears”. They are often called “spider gears” so both are correct.

Just weld all the gears inside of the carrier.

^ Zing! True, welded rear ends are not nearly as reliable as a true spool rear end, but if used for the drag strip, they usually will hold up better than on the street (too much force on gears around corners as compared to a straight launch). I am firmly opposed to driving ANY car with a "lincoln locker" because of this. I have seen some bad things from those at the road race course from the "budget racers" and one guy had half of one of the pinion gears stick into his aluminum racing seat. After he realized that, he basically dropped out except for occasional autocross events.

That just doesn't make any sense...

If you know the advantages and disadvantages of a welded diff, then why bother us?
You know you're going to get a lot of replies saying NOT TO DO IT.

You're going to ruin rear tires.
You're doing to ruin bushings in the rear suspension.
You might break something in the rear suspension.

You can’t just take the diff cover off.
To expose the carrier you will have to take the diff out of the car, remove the axle shafts, and then separate the casing.

It’s not an easy job.

If you can't afford you a LSD, you don't belong drifting or drag racing.

Not true. If you can't afford a true spool, you don't belong making a similar modification that is guaranteed to break at one point or another.

By far the most outrageously stupid remark I've heard in a long time. Thank you SonicRaT.

What's stupid, is not being able to afford a $100 part, and then beating the **** out of your car where it's almost proven to break. What's the obvious result of this?

Oh ****, my cars dead, oh damn, don't have money to fix it, ahh well.

Thus, my 'remark', although 'stupid', is true.

Where can you find a $100 LSD?

The classified section? I see them all over the place for ~$100, sometimes less, sometimes a hair more, but right around there. It's not all that hard.

Cheap will bite you in the ***.
How many "racers" run welded diffs (on the street)?
None.

If you can't afford it, don't **** with the car.

it looks to me like all you have to do is weld the spider gears through the large holes on each side of the diff if the can be acessed without removing the diff from the stump im aware that its quite a job to remove th rearend but with the front cover off it looks to be acessible without actually removing it from the housing if not then could you please explain why thanks alot eyeoutthere
