weird tranny noise

Allright i have this weird noise whenever my clutch is let out. Its a spinning noise, sounds like a deisel kinda, not very loud but it is there. This only happens when the clutch is out, when the clutch is depressed the sound goes away. I have been told it is the pilot bearing, the input bearing, the throughout bearing, and the release bearing are these all the same? Any idea on what it is thanks?

Is this hard to repair? Can it cause damage by leaving it?

its the throwout bearing. (clutch release bearing per the haynes manual)
this is the only part listed in the haynes manual for this symptom (noisy when clutch is released in neutral)
you have to have the clutch out to fix it (so yes, hard to get to). its the bearing that the clutch sits on when the car is in neutral with the clutch pedal released.

I agree execpt that you don't need to have the clutch out to fix it, you just have to drop the transmission. When you drop the transmission the you'll see the throw-out bearing fitted on to the front cover of the transmission and attached to the release fork. The throwout bearing doesn't sit on the clutch, it just pushes the teeth on the pressure plate when you press down on the clutch pedal thus releasing the clutch from the flywheel. If the clutch has been replaced recently they should have put a new throw-out bearing on it, if you plan on doing the repair yourself you'll save youself lot of money.
