Weird coolant problem, or something more sinister???

ok, i start the car, it runs, i drive a bit, then it sounds, and feels, like turning the key to the off position and taking your foot off the clutch. the only thing is when it gets down to 1500 RPM i have power again, only until it gets back up to 1700 RPM then it goes right back to 1500, then back up to 1700 then down to 1500 and then 1700, and back and forth until i turn the car off and switch keys (i know this does nothing but i still do it any ways). then after a short driving experience (bout a minuet) it starts all over again.

This is what i know, coolant is leaking out of the thermostat area, or passenger side of the motor. The thermostat is brand spanking new less then 2 weeks old (so maybe it doesnt spank anymore but you get the point), all the bolts were tightened when the thermostat was replaced, then tightened again earlier today, the thermostat was also inserted right side up, or right side down (depends on weither your a half full or a half empty kind of person). also it is important to note that the motor is not over heating, in fact the temp gauge on the dash reads like it always has, half way between cold and hot (another half empty or half full thing).

did you clean the old gasket Materail off before you put the New Thremostat in?..also did you use a New gasket?..a little RTV never hurts either when installing..and amaking sure teh tHermostat is IN correctly(pointy side up ) helps. If the Coolant is leaking around that area it could be hitting the alternator, and that would make the Power cut in and out at the alternator..check the connections ather and also the sending unit on the Water pump housing there.
