Question Weird clicking sound when car is at idle

I noticed two days ago a clicking sound coming from my engine in the general area of the thermostat, maybe a little below it. Anyway the clicking sounds like a solenoid actuating, it’s loud enough that I can hear it from inside the car. The cars been running great, I have been using the A/C a lot lately, but have not changed anything or modified anything. Could this clicking be a telltale sign of something about to die? The clicking is sporadic and sometimes rhythmic; click..click…click……………click click click click click click……………click……..click. When I give the car gas the clicking stops, I don’t hear it while driving.

I checked my BAC and the clicking is definitely not coming from it. Nothing is leaking and like I said the car is running fine. Could the thermostat be clicking like that?

Please help!!!

Arrow

Aren't the 6 ports actuated by back pressure? Besides aren't they located down in back of the motor by the manifold?

Any other ideas?

I noticed a similar click the other day. I have a turbo, though, so no actuators. mine isn't so loud that I can hear it from inside, though. I'll let you know if i figure it out.

I have the same noise. When I was reading my shop manual it said that injectors click when they are bad, or when the presser sensor is disconnected. and injectors are right next to the thermostat

Question

Interesting...is there anyway I can determine the condition of my injectors by how the car runs? Or do I have to pull'em? And manually check 'em.

The car has @ 87k miles on it and as far as I know has the original injectors. I've been running16 oz of MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) in my fuel about every two tanks, since then i've had better gas mileage and smoother running car.

Let me know if you guys figure anything out and I'll do the same.

Anyone else???

my 91 has a the same type of clicking...i cant figure out where its coming from. it could be the injectors but i dont think that means the injectors are going bad...its really rare that our injectors go bad, they might just need to be cleaned.

I found mine this weekend. It was my rear 6-port actuator. What works well is to take a short hose and uses it to pin point the clicking.

Mine had a clicking like that. Turned out to be the Check valve that is between the ACV and the intake manifold wasn't working making the ACV click.

Question

Thaniel-

This check valve, you're talking about. Where exactly is it. Was it difficult to replace, is it expensive?

Thanks

If you unbolt the ACV, take it off, it is sitting in the hole the ACV left. It is about the size of a quarter. Just have to take the ACV off. Pretty easy.

On mine I just cleaned the crud out of it. The crud was keeping the rubber from sitting flat on the metal backing and then not sealing. Exhaust would then blow into the ACV giving it fits. Least that's how I saw it.

Would have bought a new one but I didn't want to wait to put it back together.

.

i had a click in my 87 NA and i had a bitch of a time finding its source, turned out to be that something was loose on the bottom left of my engine (right before the exhaust) just tightened the bolt, and it went away. simple as that.

Could also be that your BAC needs adjustment

I just started hearing a "clicking" noise comming from what seems to be my dash. It's driving me nuts, I only hear it while I am not moving, I'm thinking maybe it's the heater core hose because it sounds like water running and craking in a pipe. Ever heard ice dethawing in a pipe before?

Another thing to add since it's summer and folks are using they're A/C, it could be the compressor going on and off if it's low on freon. May not be it but if all else fails may be worth checkin out.

I have a TII but I can induce that "clicking" sound when I jiggle the wiring at the boost sensor. I also notice an idle drop. Over course if just left alone it seems ok. I don't know, maybe do something simple like I did and just move some wires and see what happens? Good luck!!
