Weilded Differentials???

Anyone have or welded a diff? I have an 86 with an open one. Its sucks ***. My turbos lsd is so much more fun. I have an extra diff and I was thinking about welding it closed. How strong does the weld have to be? I have a mapp but I can get my hands on a MIG. I wasnt sure how safe the welded diff is in the rain for normal street driving. Im figuring its gonna be a blast for sliding and drift ****.
Thanks SKY

Its not safe on the street, let alone the rain. It can be driven on the street, but the tires will chirp every time you turn. In the rain, it is very very unsafe.

Not to mention that the welds can break, or the whole diff case can break from the loads. I have a friend whos a mechanic, owns his own shop, and does a good bit of racing. I talked to him about it before, and he was telling me about a welded diff that he had in a race car that exploded the diff case. And that was a race rear end for a camaro. Street use stresses welded diff's a lot more than race use.

Dont do it, you'll regret it. Just get a LSD from an S4 GXL, or drop a TII rear into the n/a.

Welded diffs don't belong on the street or a road race track.&nbsp About the only practical application is down the 1/4-mile drag strip.
