It seems like it works for the Japanese circuit racers but I am not sure what the relationship between the radiator and the IC is on those cars. Oh yeah, the IC would be more horizontal. So the set up would be - Air in through the grill, through the radiator (I have the alluminum K2RD unit) with a BIG fan on the back. From there it would go up through the horizontal IC and out the custom vented hood.
I know the horizontal mount radiator is a good compromise, but is it acceptable to have it mounted after the radiator in the airstream?

A fully horizontal mount radiator isn't such a good idea because you may get air bubbles that way. However, you can certainly mount it at an angle. If you look at various race cars, many of them have the radiator at an angle, but I haven't seen any with a fully horizontal radiator.

Definately don't run the IC behind the rad. I have mine right front of the rad, with a powerful electric fan mounted on the rad. I can override the auto temp control on the fan and turn it on from inside the cockpit, which is great for controlling heat soak while staging. I just keep the fan on up to and during the launch.
Next step is a cheap water mist spray in the IC.
About bigger exhaust ports being better than smaller for turbo cars. Not nessecarily.
You need bigger ports since there is more volume of exhaust gasses, you don't want restriction. Maybe for ultimate top end bigger is best, but more moderate sized ports enhance spool up time since exhaust velocity is increased (of course... as everyone knows about the twin scroll system)
I don't have a problem with max boost. In 4th gear I've seen 14 psi. That's on a STOCK downpipe and a ported wastegate!!!!!!
My issue is response time now.
Evil Aviator: In one of your earlier points you stated how road racing a turbo car involves the added aspect of staying in boost. This is why I'll ALWAYS argue that an N/A is always better for road racing. The throttle shouldn't feel like an elastic band. Of course, with experience a driver can learn to accomodate that, but it's just an extra aspect to be juggling.

Ted, thanks for the link. I was in TX and missed that thread. I have the K2RD radiator. It's so big that I had to notch my hood bracing to get it to fit with the cap on! I guess I will have to run a FMIC and will have to cut holes for the piping. It doesn't look like there is any room to duct air around the thing.

Huh?
Anyways, the turbo is too small for the application.  People have hit it on the head when they said your FMIC application is the reason for the lag.  The stock FC Turbo II turbo is too small for ANY FMIC application.
