Waterpump compatibility
Waterpump compatibility
I totally destroyed my water pump today.
The pully housing is actually broke and its kiltered. When I took it off, the barings came rolling out of it.
Its FUBAR. On the brighter sides of things, I now do not have this annoying motor vibration.
This pump is from a 91 Rx7.
I know that the water pump bolt patterns are different from the s4 to s5...I'm sure I have a complete s4 water pump set up somewhere around here, but the thing is, would it be a good idea to just swap out. By that I mean swapping out the pump and its entire housing so that the bolt patterns are the same.
I don't wanna spend more $ for a new s5 pump if I don't have to.
I did a search but didn't land on anything solid regarding this.

Yes, you can swap out the water pump and housing but they will both have to be from turbo's or na's, i.e. similar. I actually like the S4 housing because it has a metal coolant neck rather than the plastic. If you swap you will also have 2 radiator caps but that is fine, even better because that is the highest point in the coolant system. I have an S4 on my cosmo engine
Thanks for your reply.
However I just got finished installing it and came to the conclusion that you must have premix.
The s5 elc. omp is larger and therefore interfreres with the bottom of the hose neck of an s4 waterpump housing.
No big deal, I'm crafty and got out the grinder and some extra rad hose I have....it'll be just fine...its all nice and snug now.
My main question, that you answered, was that I was more concerned with the proformance between the two series...If for some reason it would flow less or too much spazing out the system a little. I've found that sometimes switching components between the two series will work but little annoying minor problems arise that just end up pissing you off later on.
Anyway,
thanks again.

It's best just to leave the stock OMP in place, and you're going to have to leave it hooked up and just stash it somewhere if you do block it off, so you might as well make use of it and just get a new WP for your series.
Well I tried to put a S5 housing on my S4 front covered S5 engine and the housing hits the cover in the bottom right.
I ended up using my NA S4 housing on my TII engine.
The only difference between NA and turbo is thta then NA doesn't have the coolant off shoot. I just used the tube on the neck for my coolant line.

All I did was shorten the neck and cope it out so the rad hose would grip tight. seems to be working fine.
