Water pump spacers? my waterpump exploded at 8000rpm!

so my omp rod caught my TB WOT and spun my tires to 8000rpm and i shut it down, to find steam from my engine bay.

I think my water pump exploded (im hoping its not the block, **** i just rebuilt it yesterday)

the shrapnal castings damaged:

Cut the p/s belt
broke all fins on fan but 1
im hoping theres a big hole in my pump (all hoses where intact, including lower rad hose, i pour in a gall of water and sounded like it was pouring out the bottom just as fast)

ugh i posted on a diff forum someone said i needed spacers or washers for the studs for the water pump or else it will **** a brick at high rpm or over time.

do you guys know where the spacers go?

"if my memory serves correctly. there are 2 tiny spacers (look like really small washers) that go on the studs for the water pump. if you dont install those the pump will sit a bit **** eyed and if you rev it high or even just drive it for a prolonged period of time it'll .... a brick."

thanks

On the up side i got a large streetport on my car, thats it, with stock exhaust and pulls right up to 5000rpm like my old motor at 7500rpm, and pulls like my friends S.P. 12a with full RB true dual and modded nikki carb.

Already raped a v-6 3.8L stang shifting at 4500rpm, along with a new 07 civic.

When the motors broken in my going for mustang GT's (5L and 4.6) 305's (easy) and 350's

The two spacers wouldn't cause THAT. They'd cause leaks, or accelerated breakdown over time.

That looks like too much tension, improper torque (excessive) or a part that was damaged prior to installation (hair line cracks you might have mssed)

^^ Yes, that confused me too, about the spacers being the cause. There was a thread here some time ago about someone cracking the front iron because they didn't use the two shims (thin washers) behind the water pump on the studs.

His throttle stuck or something... bad news... the water pump doesn't have the shims its the water pump housing. Its because there's gasket material. I'd think you could shim the water pump housing with gasket material and it would be fine.

I actually forgot to add mine, and I've had no problems. No leaks and running her up to 7200 or so rpms...

wow, I'd say thats a defective water pump, or I guess your fan being f'd up could have produced some serious vibrations. I agree w/ classicauto also. neat post one up on the Halls of Failures... wierd.

He said the fan blades broke off as a result of his water pump grenading....

To the OP:
That sucks man. Hopefully theres no other damage. Good luck!

Could overtightening the belts cause this?

i think over tightening contributed to it
note that none of the pump turbines remain, they all broke clean off, i only recovered 4 out of 6 from inside the pump

Also the shards made a pretty deep scratch on my front cover next to the timming pin

Does he know the exact timeline of events of this destruction. Prob not.

The fan blades may have broke because the 8k RPM then the water pump cracked sending the fan into the shroud and whatever...

I was throwing it out there that if you had a fan with a missing blade or two this could send serious vibrations to the pump (especially at 8k rpm), literally breaking the pump in half. As shown.

Act 1) Over torqued bolts causing cracks in the pump, when he went WOT to 8K it reached the failure point, sending the fan into the shroud and these shards of fan cut the ps belt.

Act 2) Over tighented belt causing same as no. 1. (doubt it)

Act 3) Motor Spins to 8K fan becomes distorted (maybe previously cracked) and comes in contact with something then breaks off two or more blades becoming seriously out of balance. Engine continuing to spin at 8K now pump is being heavily vibrated and fails. Kablooey!

Act 4)...

Again, I agree w/ classicauto.

Sorry, hope its just your water pump!
