Water Pump

How do you know if your water pump is working correctly? My 7 is acting funny
on saturday i advanced the timing to 20 deg, cuz it did not want to start with the 10 deg setup i having using for the last three weeks. It didn't want to start, I finally get my car start, there was water on the radiator, and some kind of oil looking liquid, i think it could b from the rebuild about two ago.the radiator was full, i drove it around my block and the overflood water contanier, was over flood. but the 7 ask for more coolant. I drove it around a bit and the add coolant light did not come on afterwards, However i down shifted from 3 to 2 and I heard a whining noise like a scraping, can anyone tell me what it is?

I don't no jack about advancing the timing, and I am ignorantly questionable about why you did that. But, if your water pump wasn't working correctly your car would overheat (obviously) A good way to tell if the water pump is failing is to observe the "weep hole" it's a tiny hole on the pump housing just below and behind the pump pulley. If water is seeping out of that it's a sign that the pump is failing. Oil in the coolant sounds like a bad coolant seal to me; but I'm wrong alot. Who rebuilt the motor? As for a whining scraping sound, did you mis-shift?
