water control o-ring

so when i was putting my engine back together i had an o-ring that was too big. the outer water one and my friend told me tojust cut it and RTV it togeter to make it fit.........waht is your take on that?

First see if you can determine why the ring is too long.
It it's just a wrong part number, then fix it.
If it has become solvent soaked, maybe RTV the whole length of the seal if you have to use it.

A good getto mod that works has it's own form of elegance. Crude but effective.
