Watch out for the Winter gas formulations

My tune is close to the edge.
After my last fill up, I started to hear some detonation.
The Winter formulations are now being delivered in Florida.
I had to back off the timing 2 more degrees last week.

This morning the temp here went down to 45.
Cold morning boost is awesome!

OH MY FREAKING GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats the funniest g-dam thing i've seen yet today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude... Get off yer lazy but and make a cold air box to sit behind the passenger headlight.. seal it to the hood with 2" foam and to the frame rail and wheel well with 1" foam... Make a fresh air headlight cover AND run ductwork up from beside the brake duct to the hole thats on the metal below where the fuel pump resister is (or used to be!). Then run you TID from the box to the turbo.....

I did that on my old car... just haven't got around to it on this car (FMIC keeps things nice and cool anyway!!)

For sure, when I have the time.
This is the crude but effective quickie.
This is my only car/daily driver, and all my free time is going toward porting & rebuilding the spare motor for a swap this winter.

After that, it's ram air for the CAI & coolingmist water injection.
Next summer I'll see if beer injection works..

Yeah.. but with a box you'll probably get better spool up too.. that damn stock inlet there has about 70% of the flow capacity of the dryer hose you got hooked up to it. (rough guess, rel number is probably a bit less, I could do the calculation, but, i don't have all the exact dimensions from your car, however, a flat oval with roughly the same circumference will cut into the flow by a good margin, )

Just pokin at ya man cause i expected more from YOU!!!!!

beer injection......

Hey, if yer gonna do the water injection.... why not guinea pig the 50/50 water methanol injection (in WWII it was called WEP on fighter planes.. War Emergency Power) funny, only took 60 years for it to find its way to the street.. actually, I'm lying, it only took about 6 months.... it was just relegated to the "nice idea" bin because the airplane mechanics who tried to adapter it to their hot rods weren't too successful back in the early 50's.. but.. we got better toys now!!!!

The rest of the CAI story:

When I first installed the TID, I was getting compressor surges.
The quickie CAI accidentally re-balanced the intake. No more ch-ch-ch on throttle close.

You're right about the restriction. When I open the throttle that tube wants to shrink.

are you sure you didnt just get a bad tank of gas? If you just added that CAI, that 2psi increase in boost would be a better culprit for pinging than some other formulation of gas.

Winter formulations? As in, adding ethanol to the gas?

Fuel formulations in a region vary by season.

Here is a link to a map of the different regional formulations.

http://www.ftc.gov/os/2004/07/040707gaspriceusamap.pdf

I'm still trying to fine the link for seasonal spec changes.

Here it is. Check out page 3 of this document.

There was a time difference.
I added the CAI last month.
The pinging happened just yesterday.
The brand was Murphy 93.

It could a bad batch of gas, but it was coincidental with the mid-October seasonal change here.
Anyway, my next tank will be Chevron 93.

That's a good point. They are not supposed to.
I was confusing vapor point & volatility with octane rating.

So – maybe my local station had some 87 dumped in the 93 tank??

Thats possible. Or there was some variation in octane from what you got. You stated that you are running a pretty edgy tune, so your car will be much more suceptible to variations in octane that say, mine would.

This is another example of why I like my alchy injection. You MAY THINK you are getting the octane on the sticker, but like everything else in this world, there are tolerances...

My aviation manitance teacher said that winter formula gas is all the old deisle mixed in with the fuel, which doesnt make a bit of sense to me, why wouldnt they just sell the old deisle as, oh I dont know, diesle?

that one link made more sense about the volitility of the crap.

I work at a gas station. We get SUMMER GAS, and WINTER GAS. Summer gas is of a..more prone to freezing gas. The winter gas has diesel added to it, less prone to freezing I guess, and it's what we get in the winter O.o..

But yeah, this is not a "new" idea..Royal Farms (The station I work at) has been doing it for at least 15-20 years..and they most likely didn't invent it, so keep going back farther!

OK - back to reason.

More research on water + methanol (or maybe beer) injection.
