Wastegate Identification Game!

ok ok ok I have been boosting to 1.38bar... yea bad... sooo I have been pedaling it to .5 a much safer boost range! Here is the problem I bought the car used and had a wastegate installed... this one

with a red spring inside. Now with a bit of google I have found out, I think its a HKS Standard wastegate but can't find any info on the spring color.... Just that they can go from 6psi to 20psi.... anyone have any more info about this??? Thanks

-Josh

the hks units are stamped with 'hks' on top of them, if this one doesnt have it, then its more than likely a cheap ebay knock off

yea no part # or any info..... any idea about the spring? and boost level? The reason I ask is because the turbo hot side is... well not attached... so I have to weld it on tomorrow and wondering if I need another spring while its out. to get into the 10-12psi range.....

here is the link to what my turbo looks like...

Well I might consider that if I had boost creep but I don't. It just doesn't open till 1.38 bar.

will a boost controller open the wastegate at a lower psi than what the spring is rated for?? I thought boost controllers could only raise the level of boost being produced by delaying the opening of the wastegate spring? I would think it's a shitty wastegate, possibly too small or just cheaply made. Am I incorrect, I'm pretty new to the turbo scene...

No a boost controller will not do that. The spring thats in the WG is what it will open at. The Boost controller bleeds of positive manifold pressure to the WG to allow more actual boost to be created. The WG will still open at what the spring is rated for but your actually creating more boost.

yea disreguard the get a boost controller comment since they have NO idea what they are talking about. A wastegate limits the LOWEST boost level possible. Then a boost controller creates a controlled leak so the turbine makes say 15lbs but the controller leaks 5lbs and your wastegate opens at 10. I bought 9.5 spring.... so hopefully that should fix the problem sucks nobody stocks springs in my area.

ok thats what i was thinking. The wastegate opening is regulated by the spring pressure rate, however a boost controller can increase boost seen by motor by delaying the opening of said spring. So to lower boost you would need either a bigger external wastegate or to port your internal wastegate? Say if the wastegate was ported to 30mm and i ran the stock spring, boost pressure would only rise to 7lbs or so and then wastegate would open and allow excess exhaust gases to bypass and bot lead to boost creep....unless an electronic boost controller is installed and set to another boost level. Sorry for threadjack, but we're on topic, thanks again.

maybe the spring you had was rated for too much boost.....

yea pretty sure it is a 20lb spring... it really is a simple system to regulate the boost. People just get confused and start giving out wrong info.

well yeah your saying you were running 1.38 bar right, and isn't 1bar around 14lbs , so that would make sense if it were a ~20lb spring........
