voltage at the fuel pump on TIIs

Everybody seems to be concerned about the voltage on modded cars. Why can't we install a voltmeter and connect it to the fuel pump to read the voltage at the pump to keep an eye on the issue?

Sure, you can do that...
Problems?&nbsp I've got got too many gauges to look at right now!
I'm waiting for MoTeC to design a NICE back-lit ADL so I can throw away all those gauges!

NO!&nbsp That backlight with the LCD SUCKS!

http://www.walbro-tdd.com/Data/Engli..._features.html

It's a reverse LCD with true backlighting that I wished MoTeC had done.&nbsp It's a much better contrast under "dark conditions."

Yeah, I see what you mean, much better looking. Ever stuck your head into a WRC Impreza? That's very similar to what they use. Very cool!

You gonna make me slap you upside the head for bragging???

The only time I'd get a chance if those puppies make our crappy ProRally circuit by the SCCA.&nbsp It's such a MUTED race versus a true FIA WRC race!

What should the voltage be at the fuel pump on a stock 87 Turbo 2?

Well since you asked...
I've worked for the NZ Rally for the past few years in the Service Parks. Basically assembling, controlling, marshalling and disassembling. There is no other way to get any closer to all the teams and cars, including all the WRC guys. It's amazing what you can get away with wearing an "Official" swinger! WRC rocks!
You can start slapping now!

try the fuel pump rewire. Your voltage doesn't look too bad though.

the two wires going to the fuel pump. Really, you need someone lying in the back of the car with a DMM while you drive under load.

In the rear of the car, leading through the fuel pump cover plate, there are two wires. Check there.
An extra ground on the pump never hurts.
Of course, neither does a sumped tank with an inline pump and twin filters
Sean Cathcart

Edit: (been drinking, last day of class). Yes, voltage at idle and very light throttle will be much lower than at WOT,

7 or 8 volts? not very high for sure. Wish I could give you exact specs, but I always use a custom wired inline pump.
I would'nt worry about upmp voltage at idle. You'll never detonate and pop your motor at idle.
Worry about getting 12V at WOT with all of you accessories on, such as lights, a/c, stereo, etc.

That would require a fuel pump rewire, I think. Or a custom wired pump

OK, the ECU controls a resistor and relay in the engine bay that runs full battery voltage to the pump at start up and under high load, and cuts it down to ~9V the rest of the time. Improves pump life apparently, and it's safe to assume that the pump is sized to suit this variable voltage and the ECU's fuel maps were also written to take this into account.
Here's a link on how to rewire the fuel pump to improve voltage to the pump, which can drop over the years as the wiring deteriorates through age. This is recommended for ANY TII, but I would consider it imperative if you're upgrading your pump. The procedure in the above link will be much easier to understand if you print out the fuel pump wiring diagram on page 50-34 of the 88 FSM. The section on the fuel pump in the EFI chapter (page 4B-72) is also useful.
Good luck!
