that sounds like the intercooler and if it wasnt bolted down good enough and rattling on the mounts of the intake manifold. if not that. i've heard a sound so so similiar to that with my friends rx7... he had an exhuast leak b/c of not putting a gasket from the header to the cats. it sounded exactly like that... just with not so much of a metal sound. but for the most part it did sound like that.

definetely a exhaust leak and very common from the turbo manifold on many many t2's. Does it sound like its coming from the turbo itself or dlightly underneath? Whatever you do i would highly suggest that you get it fixed by a shop who has a good reo w/ turbos. Especially with the fused bolts that will likely occur during the removal of the manifold.

sounds like you have a valve tapping. or piston slap. lifter might not be pumped up all the way.

anyways, yeah, check all your exhaust gaskets. i've had my turbo to manifold gasket blow out on me several times due to nuts coming loose. but that did sound very metallic. check to make sure nothing's loose.

I would check exhaust for sure as it wouldn't hurt anyways.

But I did leave out the 2 drivers side bolts on the intercooler once and it rattled horribly.

Well the intercooler was bolted down, gaskets, bolts were all on tight when installed and this was not too long ago. Took it to work and found copper shavings in oil pan so I pulled the front cover off and it was the front main bearing. I havent run it long in this condition and hope it didnt mess anything up inside. Gonna start it up tomorrow with new parts and see if it was only the front bearing, praying that it is. Thanks fellas for the suggestions.

This is looking bad. Still knocking and today got the rear bearing out and its trash. Most likely Ill have to tear this motor apart to check the rotor bearings. What else could be making it knock like this? I dont want to take the motor apart so any more thoughts guys?
Ill be replacing the rear bearing sometime this week and will post back what happens, thanks.

What would cause these bearings to fail? When I replaced the front bearing, there was no spring holding the thermo pellet in place. This is what I suspect. Any other thoughts?

oh man, those bearings are not causing that noise... my honest opinion is you're not injecting oil and your apex seals are chattering around the housing... another possibility is your alternator, i had one make louder noises than that... just detach all belts to eliminate those possibilities

i had copper 1/2" thick in my oil pan when i took it off after my engine seized, and it NEVER made any noises... if you think about how the e-shaft is rotated, it is held in place primarily by the rotors via the stationary gears... you do not have a "knocking" e-shaft

my bearings weren't even the cause of my seizure

also, just add some 2-cycle to your gas to eliminate that possiblity

if it's neither of those, than it's an exhaust leak

Great suggestion...I did remove the omp and that could be the reason but I did premix, 1 ounce per gallon, should I add more? Also what was the cause of the bearing failure then? So if the alternator is making the noise, how could it sound like its coming from the rear of the motor? Im gonna check those things out tomorrow and post back. Thanks Iketh!!!

loose clutch or flywheel?

really tho, sounds like something is vibrating, because when you rev it up a little it goes away. at idle, the harmonics are right to make it vibrate real bad.

Well when I put the flywheel nut on, I didnt torque it all the way to 300lbs. just as hard as I could go with a 150 torque wrench. I did think it was that but I also drove it and there was no obscene vibration. The knock does go away a little though. Im gonna reassemble the whole exhaust parts and go from there. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Well its not the bearings. I noticed today that as you rev it up it tends to quite out then no knock as the revs come down. Frustrating!!!! Im thinking now it could be the turbo because when I drove it there was no boost. I set the boost level low (MBC), is this normal on a fairly new motor? Well Ill check the exhaust parts and see tomorrow.

Also noticed when I took off the exhaust manifold the front exhaust port had oil/carbon residue but the rear was dry as bone. Maybe no fuel getting in rear rotor? Im sure this is a clue. I dont know, just thinking of all possibilities so I dont have to take the motor apart. Ted, ice, NZ...noobs that might of had similar probs??...where ya at??? Sorry for the being impatient.

It is quite possible I'm off-base but, My '91 TII sounded just like that with rear rotor apex seal failure. Compression check?

I assume you'd have said if the oil pressure was low.
Inspect the plugs & compression check.

Check your timing. If it's off it will make a sound like that at idle. Calibrate your TPS before setting your timing.

Oil pressure is normal, 20 at start up, 30-40 around 1500rpm-2000rpm. My TPS is set but this is a low mileage rebuild, so timing is still jumpy. It sounds more metallic like coming from rear of the engine. I would just pull the motor and tear it apart but I just dont have the time or money. Damn rotarys...hehe still love'm though.
