very peculiar transmission problem

my friend has an 87 gxl. just replaced the clutch and the trans goes out. so he replaces the trans with one he paid way to much for on ebay. and that one is acting like its seized, the shifter wont move, and when the clutch is released. the car just rattles and stalls out but it doesnt move at all.

It's probably stuck in 2 gears. You will need to pull the transmission and remove the tail housing. Once that is off, see if more than one shift rod is in the down position (or up, but less likely). If that's the case, the transmission is in multiple gears, and won't turn at all. You won't be able to move the shifter more than a little bit either.

The transmission in my car right now was shipped to me like this. It was stuck in 2nd and 4th gear, and best I can tell it was set down hard on the bell housing, and the rods just popped down into gear.
