"VERY HARD START AND ROUGHT IDLE"
HI THERE FELLOW ROTARIANS,
I HAVE AN '88 NORMAL ASPERATED FC THAT THE MOTOR WENT BAD IN. I WENT TO THE JUNK YARD AND BOUGHT AN ENGINE FROM ONE OF THE RETIRED ONES AND TO MY SURPRISE THE DARN THING STARTED UP AFTER EVERY DICK, TOM, AND HARRY NOT ONLY LAUGHED AND REDICULED ME BUT TOLD ME THAT IT WOULD NEVER WORK (LARGELY BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL ANTI-ROTARY ENTHUSIATES).
AFTER STARTING IT UP I WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE IT AROUND BECAUSE I THOUGHT THAT IT WOULD CRAP OUT ON ME AWAY FROM HOME OR IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. I STARTED DRIVING IT AROUND AFTER I FINALLY GREW THE ***** TO DO SO. FOR OVER THREE MONTHS THE DAMN THING WOULD SPUDDER PERIODICALLY AND SOMETIMES IT DID IT WHILE I WAS TAKING OFF FROM A FULL STOP WHICH WOULD SEEM AS IF IT WAS STALLING OUT. IT WAS NOT REVVING UP HIGHER THAT 3000 RPMs EITHER. I WENT OVER THINGS AND DECIDED TO DO SOME SUGERY ON IT:
I PUT IN NEW PLUGS, AFM (WHICH I GOT FROM SOMEONE, NOT SURE IF IT CAME FROM A CAR WITH AN AUTO TRANNY), COOLD AIR INTAKE, NEW RADIATOR (THE OLD ONE WAS LEAKING AND WAS GETTING WORSE EVERYDAY), NEW ALTERNATOR, CHANGED THE OIL, TPS, REPAIRED WATER PUMP AND OIL PAN LEAKS, AND THOUROUGHLY CLEANED THE ENGINE. I ALSO SPRAYED THE ENGINE HOSES WITH SOME BRAKE CLEANER TO FIND SOME LEAK BUT WAS TO NO AVAIL, HOWEVER, I DID NOT SPRAY AROUND THE EGR VALVE AREA. NOW THE CAR REVs UP FINE AND BACK FIRES AT ABOUT 6500 RPMs AND SPITS OUT FLAMES BECUASE I GUTTED OUT THE CATs. MY PROBLEMS NOW ARE :
1. THE CAR IS HARD TO START (SOME TIMES I HAVE TO HOLD THE KEYS IN THE ON POSITION FOR ABOUT 20-30 SECONDS AND IT WILL START AND STALL AND I WOULD HAVE TO REPEAT THIS ABOUT FOUR TIMES HOLDING THE GAS PEDAL DOWN EACH TIME AND FOR ABOUT 2 MINUTES AFTER IT HAS STARTED FOR THE CAR TO RUN ON ITS OWN. BUT THE CAR WILL START RIGHT UP WHEN THE ENGINE IS WARM. IT ONLY DOES IT WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD. NOT SURE THIS IS BECAUSE THERE MAY BE SOME LOSS OF BACK PRESSURE SINE THE CATs ARE GONE OR THE STARTED ID BAD. HOWEVER I AM PLANNING ON PUTTING IN SOME STARTER CONTACTS.
2. THE SECOND PROBLEM IS THAT WAS THE ENGINE IS WARM, THE IDLE GETS ROUGH. I MANAGED TO REDUCE IT A LITTLE BIT BY MAKING THE AFM MORE STABLE BY STRAPPING IT DOWN MORE SECURELY. IN ADDITION TO THE STARTER CONTACTS, I AM PLANNING TO GET ANOTHER AFM WHICH I WILL PULL OUT MYSELF, NEW MOTOR MOUNTS, CHECK AROUND THE EGR VAVLE AREA FOR VACUUM LEAKS, OR PURCHASE A SLIGHTLY USED TURBO MOTOR FROM JAPAN FROM THSES GUYS :WWW.OSAKAJDMMOTORS.COM. WHICH COMES WITH A TRANNY AND ALL THE WIRING HARNESS.

not to thread jack or anything, i was just curious to exactly what u heard about these guys. I was suggesting this site to one of my friends who wants to buy a T2 motor.
Just search osaka motors or osakamotors.com , I was doing some research on them for finding a 13bt for my first gen since they had good prices, but after reading other peoples experiences with them I started looking elsewhere.

that sounds like what mine was doing (car doesnt even start now btw) but i was told it might be my fuel injectors, i orderd them, theyre coming any day now. I should buy a water thermo sensor while im at it

Do me a favor and start ur car up for a little while and see if and of your exaust manifold pipes are cold.
