Very Hard To Get Into First
Very Hard To Get Into First
after my car has started its very hard to get into 1st from N. it will go into 1st but i got to put a lot a pressure and force it in but it does not grind. when the car is off it goes in fine, but i do hear a (metal) noise. while im driving sometimes it will be hard to get into 2nd too. i just check the tranny fluid, seems to be all there and still looks golden. new clutch master, also has a new hoes going to the release cylinder (release cylinder seem to be in good condtion too but not 100% sure). my question is should i change the tranny fluid so see what happens or get another tranny in good working order? i also grind going into 3rd at high rpm and grind down shifting into 4th and 3rd at rpms higher than 3.5k. im thinking its about the end of the road for the tranny.

You should search for the FSM (factory service manual) there are still copies around for dl, just search. This has all the info you need and more.
On RX-7s, there are two plugs on the tranny, one on the bottom for draining old fluid, and one on the side for filling. The shift tower DOES NOT connect to the tranny to allow you to fill from inside the car. Basically you need a pump of some kind to get your new fluid in.
On the whole, the process is pretty easy.

Don't forget to check the fluid level and slave and master cylinders for leakage.
I have also had clutches that when they go bad (worn to thin) get hard to shift instead of slipping. I don't know why but it might be the slave running out of stroke or a combination of things including throw-out bearing wear.
I always replace everything when I do a clutch.

How about going in the reverse? A draging clutch could be the cause of the problem. The drag could be due to a failed release bearing or a bad pilot bearing that is locking the input shift and the e shift.
