Very car noob question. Tranny filling

My tranny is starting to grind a bit on my 88 NA... Now, I've read a lot about GM Synchromesh and Royal Purple crap, but nobody has answered my question inadvertantly so I decided to just ask..

Where do I put the tranny fluid in? Does it go in the top where the gear shifter is?

You would remove the tranny fill plug on the side of the tranny, then remove the drain plug, drain the gear oil.

Put the drain plug back in, fill the tranny through the fill plug on the side.

Then put the fill plug back in.

and please put the actual question in your titles. Please help or new be titles are generally passed over for help.

no.

The part where the shifter is only lubricates the shifter... not much else.

Get under the car, look a couple inches aft the starter on the tranny. You'll see a bolt/plug with a square head. Get an adjustable wrench and remoev the plug.

Now the drain plug is right smack on the bottom of the tranny, its hard to miss. Once you have the fill plug removed, go ahead and remove the drain plug... old gear lube is some of the nastiest stuff you'll find in the car. Its going to reek like dead dinosaurs thats been getting ground up in a 17yr old transmission... you get the idea.

Once its drained out, replace the plug and run a 1/4thish or more inch (fuel line works awesome) into the fill port on the tranny. Run the other end of the fuel hose/line up to the engine bay. now grab your bottles of new redline gear lube (or gm synchromesh) and pour the lube into the fuel line.

This process takes forever... I mean you'll be standing their with these bottles for about 20 minutes trying to fill the tranny. Gear lube isn't exactly fast moving stuff.

Keep an eye on the fill port. Once you notice fluid coming out around the hose in the fill port, get get under the car. DO NOT REMOVE THE FILLING TUBE YET.

Now... Very.. VERY quickly, (have the fill plug/bolt in your hand) and remove the fill tube, instantly afterwards begin screwing the fill bolt bak on.

Why so fast? The fill tube allowed you to overfill the tranny just a tiny bit. This isn't neccesaryily a bad thing. The second you remove that fill tube, anything over the bottom of the fill lip will spew out the hole and all over you.

Anyhow, make sure both plugs are tight, and you're done.

Also you might consider using RTV gasket on the drain bolt threads. It woudl suck if that leaked...

EDIT:

Ya know, the quick qriteup Kenteth threw up in this thread i honestly think is worth archiving--allthough the title of the thread should be made more clear if it is. that's damn good advice and saves a lot of headaches.

Just use a pump, it's alot quicker.. And yes, transmission fluid reaks even when it is brand new.. lol

There's the right way and then there's the Aaron cake way (same thing only faster):

I did it the Cake way, but you can also get a hand pump specifically designed for such jobs with two tubes on each end. Much cleaner I imagine.

I also did it the "Cake" way. Very easy.
