vert top not retracting sometimes

Hey,

Does anyone know why my vert top temporarily wouldn't retract? Yesterday morning I tried to take the top down and it beeped and beeped but did not open. I tried it a couple of times over an hour, but no dice. Then later it did work. What's up with that?

Thanks,

Kevin

i fought with that same problem forever.... damn top would NOT go down on the best of days. it would go UP but not DOWN. i figured it was one of many things. most likely the switch needs replaced. but to come by one of those is rare and expensive because its integrated into the wiper switch. two, the wiring going to the motors and control box were shorting or corroded. i figured #1.

being lazy as i am, i said screw it and removed the connecting rods between the top and the motors. so now its a manual top. i actually find it easier to get the top up and down. thats just me tho.

dont think that helped, but you could always go manual.

top not retracting

I like to keep things simple first. If the beeping is occuring chances are that the switch is working properly. If the beeping is about twice a second this means that the emergency brake isn't set or the switch isn't seeing that it is set. Is the brake light on in the dash? If it is beeping about once a second (normal frequency) something else is wrong. I'm not real keen on the manual top idea as power tops are much better!

thanks Craig, I didn't know that the brake had to be engaged... that explains it then- user error!

Yah gotta set the handbrake first before the top will move. Safety feature so you don't try and do this while going 80 down the freeway. ;-)

It also has to be in neutral- even if the engine isn't running.

(on a 5-speed... probably has to be in park on an auto!)

top at speed

Actually I'm sure you will find if you pull the emergency brake up a notch or two while driving at speed; insure the light comes on in the cluster, that the top will go up and down. Mine will anyway!

Turboconv, I'm afraid that if I did that, I'd start to fly away like Mary Poppins and her umbrella. :-)
